Over 120 sites record cleaner rivers and reservoirs as pollution control measures gain traction

By TRH News Desk

LUCKNOW, May 27, 2025 – In a major environmental milestone, Uttar Pradesh recorded a significant 68.8% improvement in the quality of its rivers and reservoirs. Findings have been credited to the Yogi Adityanath-led government’s sustained efforts in water purification and pollution control, said the UP Information department in a media statement.

According to the latest report by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), rigorous initiatives resulted in marked improvements at 120 out of 176 monitored water bodies across the state. The findings underscore the impact of strengthened infrastructure, tougher enforcement, and increased investment in pollution control.

Massive Infrastructure Push Under Namami Gange

The government’s flagship river-cleaning programme, Namami Gange, has been instrumental in this achievement, said the state government in the media statement. “To date, 152 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) have been established across Uttar Pradesh,” it added.

The state government further stated that 141 STPs are operating at full capacity. “Of these, 126 STPs have met prescribed environmental standards, while six remain in the testing phase and 15 are expected to become fully operational in the near future,” it added.

“This surge in wastewater treatment capacity reflects the state’s commitment to curbing pollution in key rivers including the Ganga, Yamuna, and Gomti, alongside various smaller water bodies,” said the state government in the media statement.

Tough Stance on Polluters

Demonstrating a no-nonsense approach to environmental compliance, the UPPCB imposed penalties totalling ₹11.79 crore on non-compliant STPs between October 2022 and April 2025. However, with just ₹7.30 lakh recovered so far, the board has announced plans to tighten its penalty recovery mechanisms to ensure better accountability.

Holistic Action Backed by Leadership

The government attributes this progress not just to infrastructure upgrades but also to strategic policy enforcement and sustained monitoring. Initiatives under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and increased inter-departmental coordination have further reinforced Uttar Pradesh’s mission to improve its aquatic ecosystems.

“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has consistently emphasized river conservation as a priority, advocating for stricter controls on industrial discharge and promoting community involvement in water preservation efforts,” said the state government.

Path Ahead

Despite notable achievements, challenges remain in ensuring full compliance across all treatment facilities. The UPPCB and state authorities have vowed to intensify oversight and expand water treatment capacity to sustain and build on the current momentum.

“As Uttar Pradesh marks this breakthrough, the Yogi government reaffirms its goal to restore the ecological health of its rivers and water bodies—paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and healthier future for its citizens,” added the state government in the media statement.
