State’s Basic Education Department to introduce colorful, well-equipped learning spaces for 3–6-year-olds, focusing on nutrition, safety, and joyful learning

LUCKNOW, August 14, 2025 — Uttar Pradesh is set to give its youngest learners a vibrant start, with the state government announcing that 5,118 government schools will launch modern Balvatikas on Independence Day 2025.

The initiative, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to provide children aged 3 to 6 years with a stimulating environment to prepare them mentally, socially, and emotionally before entering Class 1.

The Basic Education Department, in partnership with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (ICDS), has relocated nearby Anganwadi centres to these schools, upgrading them with modern facilities.

“Balvatikas will lay a strong foundation for the future of young children,” said Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh, highlighting the focus on nutrition, safety, and joyful learning as core priorities.

Facilities Designed for Early Learning

Each Balvatika will feature child-friendly furniture, outdoor play equipment, colorful classrooms, dedicated learning corners, and BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) features. Activity-based resources such as practice booklets, wonder boxes, teaching-learning materials, and stationery are also being provided.

The phased deployment of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) educators will ensure inclusive and high-quality early education.

Independence Day Celebrations

The inauguration will coincide with grand celebrations on August 15, including school beautification, painting, singing and dance competitions, plays, and painting contests. Parents, community members, and local representatives have been invited to participate, fostering stronger community engagement in children’s education.

Early Education’s Crucial Role

Director General of School Education Kanchan Verma stressed the importance of the 3–6 age group for a child’s mental, emotional, and social growth. “NEP-2020 gives special importance to pre-primary education, and Balvatikas are a step towards ensuring every child is fully prepared for formal learning,” she said.

With the launch, Uttar Pradesh hopes to set a benchmark in early childhood education, blending play, creativity, and foundational learning into the first stage of schooling.
