As authorities struggle to identify burned remains after the deadly New Year’s Eve blaze, families wait in anguish at a Swiss ski resort—hoping for answers that may take days

By TRH World Desk

New Delhi, January 3, 2026 — In the frozen stillness of a Swiss ski resort, a mother waits—caught between hope and the unthinkable.

Laetitia Brodard-Sitre, whose 16-year-old son Arthur has been missing since a devastating New Year’s Eve fire tore through a crowded bar, has remained near the charred site, desperate for information. Speaking to CBS News, she voiced a grief that defies language.

“It’s not imaginable to tell ourselves that our child has burned in a fire on December 31, 2025 while spending New Year’s Eve,” Brodard-Sitre said.

Arthur was among dozens of young people inside the popular bar at the Swiss ski resort when flames erupted shortly before midnight celebrations turned catastrophic. The fire spread with ferocity, trapping patrons inside and leaving behind scenes of destruction that authorities now describe as among the most difficult they have faced.

For families, the waiting has become its own torment.

Brodard-Sitre says she does not know whether her son is alive or dead—whether he escaped, whether he was injured, or whether his remains are even identifiable. Along with other parents, she has submitted DNA samples, a step that underscores the severity of the disaster.

Officials have warned that identifying the victims will be a slow and grim process, as the intensity of the blaze left many bodies badly burned, complicating forensic work. Authorities say it may take days before families receive confirmation.

A Celebration That Turned Fatal

The fire broke out during New Year’s Eve celebrations at a well-known bar in a high-end Swiss ski destination, a place typically associated with safety, affluence, and winter leisure. Emergency crews responded swiftly, but the speed and heat of the fire overwhelmed the venue.

Investigators are examining safety conditions, evacuation routes, and whether overcrowding or pyrotechnic elements played a role. For now, officials are urging restraint as forensic teams work methodically through the wreckage.

But for parents like Brodard-Sitre, time has slowed to a crawl.

Each hour without news deepens the fear that silence itself may be an answer.

In tragedies like this, statistics blur—but a mother’s words cut through the noise. Behind every number is a child who went out to celebrate a new year, and a family now trapped in a nightmare they never imagined.
