Washington, February 25: French President Emanual Macron snubbed his US counterpart Donald Trump on ways Europe is funding the war efforts of Ukraine. Macron rebutted claims of Trump that Europe is giving loans to Ukraine for war efforts against Russia.

Macron held a meeting with Trump in his first trip to Washington after the November Presidential election in the US. The Macron-Trump meeting was preceded by an unprecedented flare in tension between Europe and the US in the backdrop of the unilateral Trump outreach to Russia to end the Ukraine War.

“I support the idea to have Ukraine first being compensated because they are the one to have lose a lot of their fellow citizens and being destroyed by these attacks,” said Macron while addressing reporters alongside Trump on Monday.

French President further snubbed the Trump plan on Ukraine War, saying that “all of those who paid for could be compensated, but not by Ukraine, by Russia”.

To this Trump interrupted, claiming: “Again, just so you understand, Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They get their money back.”

Not to be browbeaten by Trump, Macron rebutted the claims of the US President. “No, in fact, to be to be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort. And it was through, like the US, loans, guarantee, grants, and we provided real money, to be clear,” said Macron.

Russia-Ukraine War After 3-Yr Spurs US-Europe Disengagement

Geopolitical analyst Ian Bremmer in a post on X said that “Ukraine in the last three years of the war has received over $280 billion in military, humanitarian and economic assistance”. He said that the US extended the support of $115 billion. The European Union extended the support of $170 billion, added Bremmer.

“We have $230 billion frozen assets in Europe, Russian assets, but this is not as a collateral of a loan, because this is not our belonging, so they are frozen,” Macron said with Trump looking solemn.

The French President further rebutted Trump, saying: “If at the end of the day, in the negotiation we will have with Russia, they’re ready to give it to us, Super. It will be loan at the end of the day and Russia would have paid for that.”

The US President sought to counter the statements of Macron. “If you believe that, it’s OK with me. But they get their money back. We don’t and now we do,” said Trump.
