New Delhi, January 2: The New Year revelry in the US soured after twin truck attacks which have been linked to terror incidents by authorities, leaving at least 15 people dead. Probe agencies confirmed that both the trucks had been booked through the same aggregator App.
The FBI has termed the Wednesday morning New Orleans incident of a truck ramming into a crowd as a terror incident. Fifteen people died in the incident. Scores of the people have been injured.
“The incident involved a pickup driver ramming the vehicle into a crowd during New Year’s celebrations on Bourbon Street in New Orleans,” the CNN said in a news report.
In another incident, a Tesla truck exploded on Wednesday outside the Trump Las Vegas hotel in Nevada. Authorities are probing the incident as a possible act of terror.
“The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it was investigating a fire at the entrance to the tower,” ABC News said in a report, adding that the “public was told to avoid the area”.
It stated that the “driver pulled into the valet area of the hotel and the vehicle exploded”. Quoting officials, the report said that the “driver was killed and, so far, is the only fatality from the incident while seven bystanders had minor injuries”.
President Joe Biden addressed the nation after the New Orleans attack, warning the people against “jumping to conclusions”. Biden directed law enforcement officials to “intensively” investigate the truck attack in the French Quarter in New Orleans.
The US President stated in the address that an American citizen drove the truck into the crowd. “The truck driver was a former US military person. He posted videos on social media, showing that he was inspired by ISIS, especially the desire to kill,” Biden said in his address to the nation.
Saying that he has directed attorney general, the FBI, the Homeland Security, the National Counterintelligence and Terrorism Center, and the intelligence community for speedy probes, Biden said that he would “share that information as soon as we can confirm it”.
Reports stated that trucks used in the twin attacks had been booked from the same App Turo. “Cybertruck of Tesla and the Ford F-150 Lightning used in the suicide attack in New Orleans were rented from Turo,” said ABC News in a report.
