At Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s state conference, Vijay slammed PM Modi for bias against Tamil Nadu and accused DMK of shielding corruption

MADURAI, August 21, 2025—Actor-turned-politician Vijay made a high-octane pitch at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) state conference “Maanadu” in Madurai, declaring that his party will take on both Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s DMK in the coming elections.

Addressing a massive crowd, Vijay accused the Prime Minister of discriminating against Tamil Nadu. “PM Modi is biased as the BJP doesn’t have even one Lok Sabha MP from the state,” he said.

The actor-politician also targeted the ruling DMK, alleging that corruption cases are quietly buried in Delhi. “Whenever there is a raid, the DMK silently goes to Delhi and gets the case suppressed,” Vijay charged.

Positioning TVK as a movement for people’s welfare, he stressed: “TVK’s politics is real, emotional, for the betterment of people, not for political benefits.” Declaring BJP as the party’s “ideological enemy” and DMK as its “political enemy,” Vijay added: “Don’t underestimate us, TVK will render a blow to any anti-people government.”

In a symbolic finale, Vijay ended his speech with the powerful declaration, “Naa Varen” (I will come), underscoring his arrival as a serious political challenger ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

The actor also struck an emotional note, singing a popular M.G. Ramachandran song, stirring the crowds that had waited for hours in the scorching heat.

Tamil Nadu-based political observers said that Vijay astutely positioned TVK as a rival of the ruling DMK, while seeking to coopt the legacy of the AIADMK with his MG Ramachandran obeisance and also that of late actor Vijaykanth, who had launched the DMDK in the state. Vijay also hinted that he will himself take an electoral plunge in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by contesting from Madurai East constituency.

“Film star turned politician Vijay is aiming to unsettle decades-old Tamil Nadu politics. His Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is hogging national attention for a not so far seen spectacle in Madurai where the outfit is holding a conference for party’s cadres,” wrote political observer Manish Anand in The Raisina Hills ahead of Vijay’s Madurai show of strength. The former film star quit the stardom in his early 50s. He claims that he gave up a lucrative cinema career for the cause of the people.

In his past utterances, he prioritized fight against corruption. He lists both the ruling DMK and the AIADMK as his rivals.

Political observers are currently dismissive of Vijay, saying that several of his predecessors from the cinema world came and went away without weathering even the exteriors of either the DMK or the AIADMK. Vijaykanth had also launched his party from Madurai. The late film star turned politician eked out peripheral share in the state politics.

Vijay claims that his politics is above caste and religion. Yet his supporters had been seen in outreach with churches in Tamil Nadu. He is getting advice from maverick electoral strategist Prashant Kishor.
