New Delhi, November 5, 2025 — New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in his victory speech raised the war cry against US President Donald Trump. In his four-word message for Trump, Mamdani said: “Turn the volume up.”

Sizing up the momentous victory which has rekindled hope in the rank and file of Democrats, Mamdani framed his win as a rise of anti-Trumpism in the American politics. “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” said Mamdani, flanked by his family members, as he spoke to a cheering crowd on Tuesday night.

Mamdani stood tall against a Trump led negative campaign against him in which the US President aimed at his identity. Trump called him a Communist and extremist. Yet Mamdani polled over 50% votes to gain a resounding victory in an election keenly watched for signal to the direction of the American politics. In a span of 10 months, Trump unleashed disruptions globally, as well as domestically, while pandering to his MAGA constituency built around polarising narratives.

“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” Mamdani spoke to the supporters, as he sought to frame a counter narrative to Trumpian worldview. “This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one.”

Mamdani is an immigrant with an Indian parentage. He is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair. He also carries an African lineage. Mamdani is the first immigrant to win an election for the post of the NYC Mayor.

“So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us you will have to go through all of us. In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” said Mamdani. “We will leave mediocrity in our past. No longer will we have to open a history book for proof that Democrats can dare to be great. Our greatness will be anything but abstract.”

Riding a campaign built around affordability, Mamdani spoke to his core supporters who were sent to the margins by high housing prices and collapse of the neighbourhood markets. “It will be felt by each New Yorker when the city they love finally loves them back,” Mamdani ringed the tune of anti-Trumpism.
