Rajnath Singh Raises Concerns Over anti-India Separatists in US

New Delhi, March 17: Union Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh told visiting US Director of Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to act against Sikh separatists. India is raising the issue of the Sikh separatists operating from the US soil with the Donald Trump administration.
“Biden administration openly played the Khalistan card against India, including briefing Khalistan militants at the White House. In her discussions in New Delhi today, Gabbard heard Indian concerns about such violence-glorifying militants making terrorist threats from US soil,” wrote Brahma Chellaney on X. Multiple media reports stated that Singh urged upon Gabbard to crackdown against Sikh separatists. FBI Director Kash Patel has also recently given stern warning to Sikh leaders from Canada per reports.
Gabbard is on a multi-nation visit currently while being in New Delhi to take part in a meeting of intelligence heads of ‘Five Eyes’ consisting of the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK.
It is worthwhile to recall that the US had raised the issue of the alleged assassination plot against the American citizen Gurpatwant Singh Pannun earlier. An Indian, Nikhil Gupta, had also been extradited from Europe for the murder plot of Pannun.
But Pannun faces several terror charges in India. Union Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in his first meeting with his US counterpart Marco Rubio had also raised the issue of the attacks on the Indian consulate in San Franscico. Jaishankar after his meeting with Rubio had said that India wants the US to probe into the attack on the Indian consulate.
Incidentally, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had charged India with the murder plot of Hardeep Singh Nijjar on the basis of the intelligence shared through the ‘Five Eyes’ network. India and the US relations in the last few months of the Joe Biden administration had also come under the spell of the Sikh separatists.
“Strategic security remains a vital pillar of the comprehensive global strategic cooperation between the two nations. Rajnath Singh and Ms Tulsi Gabbard reviewed the significant strides made in the areas of military exercises, strategic cooperation, integration of defence industrial supply chains and information-sharing cooperation, especially in the maritime domain, between India and US,” said the Ministry of Defence in a media statement.
It also stated that the “two leaders explored avenues for collaboration in cutting-edge defence innovation and niche technologies, reflecting their shared commitment to advancing mutual strategic interests”. Additionally, they addressed key areas such as enhancing interoperability and fostering greater integration of defence industrial supply chains to bolster resilience and innovation, said the ministry.
