Karoline Leavitt Defends Trump’s Crackdown Amid Los Angeles Protests

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, June 12, 2025 – White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt unleashed a fiery defence of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown during a Wednesday briefing, accusing “left-wing radicals” of violently attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, Border Patrol agents, and Los Angeles police during protests in Los Angeles.

The unrest, sparked by stepped-up ICE raids, has escalated tensions, prompting Trump to deploy thousands of National Guard troops and Marines to the city. Leavitt described the protests as “shameful,” claiming, “Left-wing radicals waving foreign flags viciously attacked ICE and Border Patrol agents as well as Los Angeles police officers.”

She further characterized the demonstrations as an assault on “American culture and society itself,” alleging rioters burned American flags, chanted anti-ICE slogans, and defaced public property. “President Trump will never allow mob rule to prevail,” she asserted, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to law and order, said the The Independent in a report.

The Los Angeles protests erupted last Friday in response to ICE operations targeting undocumented immigrants, part of Trump’s broader deportation agenda. On Saturday, Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard troops, bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom, after reports of clashes involving rocks and Molotov cocktails hurled at federal agents. By Tuesday, an additional 2,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines were sent to protect ICE facilities and personnel, a move Newsom called a “military dragnet.”

Leavitt dismissed claims that the majority of protests were peaceful, stating, “We have seen mobs of violent rioters and agitators assaulting law enforcement officers, assaulting our federal immigration authorities.” She rebuffed a reporter’s question about Trump’s support for peaceful protests as “stupid,” insisting the president upholds First Amendment rights but condemns violence, said a report by CBS News.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed a downtown curfew for a second night on Tuesday to curb vandalism and looting, with over 400 arrests reported since the protests began.

Leavitt refused to comment on a letter from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urging the Pentagon to authorize military arrests of protesters, stating only that Trump “understands the legal authority he invoked.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters that the National Guard’s role could expand to other states. His claims stoked fear that Trump would seek escalation of tensions with immigration protestors.

Protests have spread to cities like New York, Chicago, and Austin, with activists planning nationwide rallies on Saturday under the “No Kings” movement, coinciding with Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C., reported The Independent
