Trump’s Easter Truth Social Rant Sparks Backlash for Attacks on Opponents, Judges, Law Enforcement

New Delhi, April 20, 2025: President Donald Trump’s Easter Sunday message on Truth Social ignited a firestorm of criticism for its vitriolic attacks on political opponents, judges, and law enforcement, overshadowing the Christian holiday’s themes of renewal and hope.
The post, which briefly acknowledged Easter before launching into a tirade against perceived enemies, drew sharp reactions from political observers, journalists, and White House critics on X, highlighting the divisive tone of Trump’s rhetoric.
Newsweek reported, “President Donald Trump’s Easter message, which focused less on the Christian holiday and more on attacking political rivals, including former President Joe Biden and judges, over immigration policy, has drawn backlash from critics on both sides of the aisle.”
Trump’s post began, “Happy Easter to all, Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting and scheming so hard to bring Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, the Mentally Insane, and well-known MS-13 Gang Members, and Wife Beaters, back into our Country.”
It furthered went bile, saying “WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Judges and Law Enforcement Officials” and Biden’s “Open Borders Policy.”
X posts from political observers and journalists reflected a mix of condemnation and dismay. Christopher Webb, a Democrat, wrote, “Imagine being this bitter, this unhinged — and still thinking you’re the victim. Trump can’t even say Happy Easter without turning it into a rage-filled tantrum.”
Shane Claiborne, a Christian activist, shared a cartoon by Mike Luckovich depicting Trump hugging a cross with a thought bubble of a “Big Beautiful ‘T’ for Trump,” commenting, “Easter… according to Trump. Every Easter as Trump goes on a narcissistic rant…”
The post’s focus on grievances contrasted sharply with traditional Easter messages. Catholic News Agency noted Trump’s earlier Palm Sunday posts, which emphasized Christian themes, quoting him: “Christians around the world remember the crucifixion of God’s only begotten Son, Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and, on Easter Sunday, we celebrate his glorious resurrection and proclaim…”
However, the Easter message pivoted to political attacks, prompting accusations of exploiting the holiday. On X,
@risnarojali highlighted the controversy, posting, “This is Donald Trump’s controversial and politically charged Easter message on Truth Social,” amplifying TrumpDailyPosts’ coverage.
White House correspondents also weighed in. Charlie Sykes, a political commentator, referenced Trump’s pattern of inflammatory rhetoric, noting on X, “Let’s just think about the last three days… He’s talking about using government power to retaliate,” linking it to prior threats against media outlets like NBC.
Critics argued the post exemplified Trump’s divisive style. The Independent contrasted Trump’s message with Biden’s 2024 Easter post, which read, “To all those gathering in churches and homes around the world today: Happy Easter. May God bless and keep you,” noting the stark tonal difference.
Trump’s defenders, however, saw the post as a bold stance against perceived threats. A Truth Social user reposted by Trump claimed, “The Crucifixion of Donald Trump,” framing his legal battles as martyrdom, a sentiment echoed by some MAGA supporters on X.
The backlash underscored ongoing tensions over Trump’s use of Truth Social, described by The Washington Post as a platform where he offers an “intimate view of what his second term could look like: isolated, vitriolic and vengeful.”
As Newsweek observed, “Issues of religious freedom and the First Amendment’s meaning will continue to be a prominent constitutional issue debated in society,” with Trump’s post fueling that discourse.
