New Delhi, March 16: The US carried out major strikes against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. The attacks came after US President Donald Trump authorized the first military actions in his second term.

“On March 15, U.S. Central Command initiated a series of operations consisting of precision strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets across Yemen to defend American interests, deter enemies, and restore freedom of navigation,” said US Central Command in a post on X.

Peter Hegseth, the US Secretary of Defence, in a post on X said that “Houthi attacks on American ships and aircraft (and our troops!) will not be tolerated; and Iran, their benefactor, is on notice”.

The Middle East commentators state that the Houthis along with Hezbollah and the Hamas consist of three foes of Israel who have the support of Iran. While Israel has almost decimated the Hamas and Hezbollah, the Houthis have so far defied the counterattacks by Israel and the US.

Trump announced with a long post on X of his ordering the military action against the Houthis. “They have waged an unrelenting campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism against American, other ships, aircraft, and drones,” said Trump on his order to attack the Houthis.

The US President also explained loss to the supply chains to the Houthis disrupting maritime trades. Billions of dollars have been lost for the world economy, added Trump. Israel had also been carrying out strikes in Yemen.

OSINTdefender, an open-source intelligence network, said that “the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG-64) and an unidentified Arleigh Burke-class destroyer launched Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles (TLAM) at Houthi targets”. It added that “the strike campaign continued to degrade and destroy the Houthi’s military infrastructure. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer could be any one-off at least three currently in the southern CENTCOM area of responsibility: the USS Stout (DDG-55), USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109), and USS Sullivan (DDG-68).”

Reports said that the US, Isreal and the UK carried out joint strikes against the Houthi targets in Yemen. “The US, UK and Israeli warplanes have been bombing Yemen, and oil refining facilities in Al-Hudaydah Port,” said Patrick Henningsen, a geopolitical analyst and journalist in a post on X.

‘Open-Source Intel’ quoted a Houthi spokesperson, saying that “the aggression will not deter Yemen from continuing to support the Palestinians and fulfilling its obligations in supporting Gaza. It will not go without a response, and our forces are prepared to deal with escalation that will be met with escalation.”
