China takes centre stage in Biden vs Trump presidential debate

New Delhi, June 28: China is setting out to take centre stage in the presidential election in the US slated for later this year. The first presidential debate hosted by a television channel was warmed up with ambassador-level war of words between the US and China.

“China is killing us as a country,” Donald Trump, former President of the US, told his successor, Joe Biden. The debate was hosted for the first time by a television channel, CNN, with tweaked format.

“You can not let that happen; you’re destroying our county,” Trump charged at Biden. Trump showed clear signs that he would be raising China factor to ambush Biden in the Presidential election.

The commentators shed limelight on Biden going off-track in his responses in the debate. Biden, 81, is being challenged by Trump, 78.

Trump also charged on Biden for the extended Ukraine War and ‘Gaza War’. The Republican accused Biden of foreign policy failure, saying that no one takes the US seriously.

Trump, midway in his presidency in 2017, had officially launched the containment policy against China. In 2017, the US had begun imposing crippling duties on Chinese imports.

The 2022 visit of the former House Speaker of the Congress, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan had sent the US and China relations into a downward spiral. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Biden had held last year a summit meeting in Chicago to put the bilateral relations back on the rails.

But this week the US and China entered into an ugly spat. The US ambassador in Beijing Nicholos Burns in an interview to the Washington Post alleged that China was blocking the access of the people to the American embassy.

Burns accused China of undermining diplomacy. He told Jonathan Cheng of WSJ that “Beijing has been stirring up anti-American sentiment and preventing people from attending embassy events”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China had sharply reacted to remarks of Burns. “It’s the US harassing, interrogating & deporting of Chinese students that stands in the way of promoting the exchanges,” China MFA posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

China slammed Burns, saying his remarks in the interview “don’t reflect the facts. China is committed to promoting China-US people-to-people exchanges.”

The commentators are noting that Biden was wayward in his responses while Trump pushed ahead with his aggressive posturing. Trump claimed that the US had best environmental record under his presidency.

But Biden warned that a Trump Presidency will hasten the World War III. Biden claimed that Trump victory in the poll will amount to green lighting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Biden leaned on warm relations between Putin and Trump in the past to sharpen his attacks against the Republican.

Trump and Biden sparred with personal remarks as well. Biden told Trump: “You had sex with a porn star”.

“I did not have sex with porn star,” replied Trump. Biden slammed Trump for holding “morals of an alley cat”.
