Trump Drops Calling Canada PM A Governor

 By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, March 28: In a significant development, US President Donald Trump struck a conciliatory note in a phone call with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump addressed Carney as Prime Minister in contrast to him calling Justin Trudeau as a Governor.

“It was an extremely productive call. We agree on many things. We will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

Speaking to reporters after the call with Carney, Trump said: “We are approaching Liberation Day, on April 2. Most countries have been apologetic. They had taken advantage of us.”

Trump said that “most countries took advantage of us because of the people who sat behind this Resolute Desk”. “For some countries, it (tariffs) will not be good. But for most countries, things will get better,” added Trump.

US President has said that the reciprocal tariffs will come in force on April 2. However, he has been moderating his stance. Trump earlier said that tariff target will be narrow.

Carney also termed his phone call with Trump productive. But Canadian Prime Minister also has said that the tariffs will be betrayal of the US-Canada relations of close economic ties. The tariffs on imported cars have particularly riled up Canadians.

Trump spoke to Carney for the first time after Trudeau left the office of the Prime Minister in Canada. Trump had stormy relations with Trudeau.

Carney after assuming office has spoken of overhauling the economy and also de-couple with the US. Canada on the lines of China has made it clear that there will be counter tariffs on the US goods.

“The Prime Minister informed the President that his government will implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy,” said Carney’s office in a media statement after the phone call.

Carney will be facing the national elections in Canada on April 28. Trump said that he will meet the Canadian Prime Minister after the elections. Canada will be seeking a new pact on economy and security with the US after the elections.

Canada will be facing tariffs at a difficult time with the economy crumbling. Unemployment rate in Canada is already high. Trudeau faced a massive loss of popular endorsement on account of economic stress in the country.
