Trump’s Truth Social Posts Signal Tough Stance on EU Trade Negotiations

By TRH News Desk

NEW DELHI, May 27, 2025 – US President Donald Trump asked the European Union to learn from China and make a quick “trade deal”. Trump threatened in his latest Truth Social post that he’s empowered to “set a deal”.

The US President accused the EU of “slow walking”. He said that he had been “happy with 50% tariffs on the EU”. His post also stated that the EU officials have sought to engage in talks that he welcomed.

“I was extremely satisfied with the 50%tTariff allotment on the European Union, especially since they were ‘slow walking (to put it mildly!), our negotiations with them,” said Trump in his latest Truth Social post. He added, “Remember, I am empowered to ‘SET A DEAL’ for Trade into the United States if we are unable to make a deal, or are treated unfairly.”

“I have just been informed that the E.U. has called to quickly establish meeting dates. This is a positive event, and I hope that they will, FINALLY, like my same demand to China, open up the European Nations for Trade with the United States of America,” added Trump.

The US President offered the China template to the EU to expedite the trade negotiations. China after spurning initial feelers had taken the bait and begun negotiations with the Trump administrations. Afterwards, the US and China scaled down their respective tariffs.

While Trump is sounding tough on the EU, he is hoping that his administration quickly forces another “deal”. By reiterating his demand for a “fair deal”, Trump also warned of potential tariffs if progress stalls.

In his post, Trump emphasized the need for the EU to address what he described as “unfair trade practices,” including non-tariff barriers and trade deficits, signaling a continuation of his aggressive trade policy. The update comes amidst ongoing talks, with experts cautioning that the rhetoric could escalate tensions but also prompt concessions from the EU.

Earlier, Trump had stated that “the EU must step up and address their trade barriers, VAT taxes, and corporate penalties. Our discussions are moving, but not fast enough. If they don’t act, we will impose tariffs to protect American workers and businesses.”

This follows his earlier threat of a 50% tariff on EU goods, which he delayed until July 9, 2025, after initial backlash. The post reflects Trump’s frustration with the pace of negotiations, as reported by CNN Business on May 24, 2025, which noted, “President Donald Trump on Friday threatened a 50% tariff on goods from the European Union, citing a lack of progress in current trade negotiations.”

Finance.yahoo.com reported that the EU agreed to speed up trade talks following Trump’s tariff threats, with EU Trade Chief Maroš Šefčovič leading negotiations focused on key sectors like semiconductors, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals. The outlet quoted Šefčovič, who said, “We held ‘good calls’ with Trump administration officials on Monday after the close trading partners moved forward with negotiations.” This indicates a diplomatic push to avert tariffs, though Trump’s latest post suggests impatience with the progress.
