US Strikes Iranian Nuclear Facilities: Trump Hails ‘Spectacular Success,’ UN Chief Warns of Escalation
By TRH News Desk
NEW DELHI, June 22, 2025 – A Day after he was officially nominated for Nobel Peace Prize, US President Donald Trump commissioned attacks on Iran’s three nuclear facilities, dropping six 30,000-pound each bunker buster bombs, while American warships rained missiles on Iranian targets. In another act of hiding behind smokescreen, Trump ordered the Iran strike after giving two weeks of window for diplomacy to work out solutions to Israel-Iran conflicts.
In a televised address to the nation late Saturday, Trump announced that US military forces conducted precision airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—claiming the operation was a “spectacular military success” that “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity.
The strikes, marking the first direct US military action against Iran, have heightened tensions in the Middle East, prompting sharp warnings from the United Nations. The US operation involved B-2 stealth bombers deploying six 30,000-pound “bunker buster” bombs on the heavily fortified Fordow facility, alongside 30 Tomahawk missiles launched from US submarines targeting Natanz and Isfahan, according to details shared by Trump with Fox News host Sean Hannity.
Israeli officials confirmed they were informed in advance. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the strikes as a “bold decision” that “will change history.” However, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark rebuke, expressing grave alarm over the US action. “I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today,” Guterres said in a statement.
“This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security. There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.” Urging de-escalation, he emphasized, “There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”
To justify the direct attacks on Iran, Trump leaned on rhetoric. Flanked by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Trump described the strikes as a decisive blow against “the world’s number one state sponsor of terror.” He accused Iran of killing thousands, including American soldiers, through its proxies and roadside bombs, specifically referencing the slain Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
“Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace,” Trump declared. “If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier.” Iran has vowed retaliation against the US bases in the Middle East. There are almost 40,000 US military personnel in the Middle East, manning multiple bases.
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization condemned the “savage assault” but insisted its nuclear program would continue, claiming enriched uranium reserves had been relocated prior to the strikes. Iranian officials reported no radiological risks to nearby residents, though the extent of the damage remains unclear.
Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, warned, while speaking to The Guardian, “The US entering the fray directly shifts the dynamics of the Israel-Iran conflict. Iran may feel compelled to retaliate, possibly targeting US assets or allied bases, which could draw in other regional actors like Saudi Arabia or the UAE.” Parsi noted Iran’s capacity to disrupt global energy markets by targeting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint, as a likely response.
