Trump Nominates Lebanese-born Massad Boulos for Arab, Middle East Affairs

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, December 1: US President-elect Donald Trump nominated Lebanese-born Massad Boulos as his principal aide for Arab and Middle East affairs. Trump described Boulos as a “deal-maker”.

Trump’s nomination of Boulos has come at a time when Syria is under siege by Islamists who have captured key cities. Also, Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire preceded his nomination by Trump.

The US President-elect in his announcement message stressed that Boulos as a Senior Advisor on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs “is a dealmaker and supports peace in the Middle East”. Boulos bagging the key position in the second administration of Trump is being hailed as an assertion of transnational political influence in the US politics.

“This pick will likely have a strong role in Trump’s efforts to end the wars between Israel, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc. Boulos helped mobilize Arab American voters for Trump this year – helping Trump win Michigan,” said Eric Daugherty, a US-based broadcaster, in a message on X.

Trump in his message said that “I am proud to announce that Massad Boulos will serve as Senior Advisor to the President on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs. Massad is an accomplished lawyer and a highly respected leader in the business world, with extensive experience on the international scene.”

Trump also stated that “Boulos has been a longtime proponent of Republican and Conservative values, an asset to my Campaign, and was instrumental in building tremendous new coalitions with the Arab American Community”. “Massad is a dealmaker, and an unwavering supporter of PEACE in the Middle East. He will be a strong advocate for the United States, and its interests, and I am pleased to have him on our team,” added Trump.

Habib al-Badawi, Professor at Lebanese University, stated on the nomination that the “US cultural diplomacy with Lebanese-American and Arab-American communities is deepening ties and fostering mutual understanding”. “Boulos exemplifies this model of effective engagement,” he added.

In a profile of Boulos on Linkedin, al-Badawi traced the evolution of transnational political influence in the US Presidential elections. “Immigrant political participation in America has long been understood as a process of gradual assimilation into established power structures. In earlier generations, the expectation was that immigrant communities would slowly shed their foreign allegiances and fully integrate into the American political framework” explained the academician.

He, however, said that the “experiences of modern political figures like Massad Boulos demonstrate a departure from this model. Rather than simply assimilating, contemporary actors have begun to leverage their transnational connections, blending domestic and international concerns to shape their political engagement.”

He noted Boulos’s career trajectory, from his educational achievements at the University of Houston to his leadership of SCOA Nigeria, stressing that it illustrates this new wave of political influence. “His bid for a seat in the Lebanese parliament in 2009, although unsuccessful, was a watershed moment in recognizing the porous boundaries of national politics. His efforts represented more than just a local electoral challenge; they symbolized the increasing interdependence of political realities across borders,” added al-Badawi.

The academician also stated that “Boulos’ campaign signified how global political experiences could inform and enhance the way communities like Arab-Americans engage with their home countries and their adopted nation. This experience, while not leading to immediate electoral success, would lay the groundwork for Boulos’s later efforts to mobilize Arab-American communities in U.S. politics, shifting the traditional notion of political engagement to one that was more global in scope.”
