New Delhi, November 27, 2025 — Two US National Guardsmen were critically wounded in a shooting just steps away from the White House on Wednesday, triggering an immediate security escalation in Washington, DC and a strong response from top US leaders.

US Vice President JD Vance was the first senior official to publicly acknowledge the incident, confirming that authorities are still piecing together key details. “Apparently there was a shooting outside the White House just a couple of hours ago. We’re still learning everything. We still don’t know the motive,” he told reporters, adding that many facts remained unclear.

Soon after, US President Donald Trump reacted on his social media platform Truth Social, strongly condemning the attacker. Describing the suspect as “the animal that shot the two National Guardsmen,” Trump said both victims were in critical condition and undergoing treatment at separate hospitals.

Trump stated that the shooter was also severely wounded and would “pay a very steep price.” The president expressed solidarity with the armed forces and law-enforcement agencies, calling them “truly great people.”

Further details were provided by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said he and his team were briefed on the attack after official meetings. He described the shooting as a “cowardly, dastardly act” that deliberately targeted members of the National Guard.

“These are heroes willing to serve people they don’t even know because they love their country, their capital and their community,” Hegseth said, adding that the attack would only “stiffen our resolve.”

Hegseth announced that, on the direction of the president, the Secretary of the Army and the National Guard leadership would deploy 500 additional troops to Washington, DC to strengthen security. He said the attack occurred just steps away from the White House and vowed that such violence “will not stand.”

“The drop in crime has been historic. The increase in safety has been historic,” Hegseth said, warning that any attempt to target security personnel would be met with an uncompromising response. “President Trump will never back down.”

Authorities have not yet released information on the suspect’s identity or motive. Investigations are ongoing as security remains heightened across the US capital.
