After months of leaving the post vacant, Trump taps close aide Sergio Gor for key diplomatic role in New Delhi, coinciding with his tariff offensive against India

NEW DELHI, August 23, 2025 — US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he is nominating Sergio Gor as the next United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, ending an eight-month vacancy at one of Washington’s most crucial diplomatic postings.

Gor, a longtime Trump loyalist and former Director of Presidential Personnel, has been instrumental in staffing the administration with “America First Patriots,” according to Trump. The US President praised Gor as “a great friend” who has played a central role in his campaigns, publishing ventures, and policy operations.

“For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda,” Trump said.

Reactions from Trump’s inner circle were swift. US Vice President JD Vance posted on X, “Sergio is a great guy and will make a fantastic ambassador for our country to India. So much of our success over the last few months was due to Sergio’s hard work.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed the sentiment, calling Gor “an outstanding pick” with “an unprecedented track record of success executing for the President.”

In his own post, Gor expressed gratitude to Trump, writing: “Nothing has made me prouder than to serve the American people through the GREAT work of this Administration! It will be the honour of my life to represent the United States.”

The announcement comes as Trump intensifies his trade pressure on New Delhi, singling out India for what he called “excessive tariffs” on American goods. The timing of Gor’s appointment is being read as both a signal of the administration’s intent to reset ties and a warning that tougher negotiations lie ahead.

By also naming Gor as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Trump has revived questions over whether Washington is reverting to a “hyphenated” approach in dealing with India and Pakistan. While recent administrations emphasized India’s distinct role, this broader South Asia brief could once again entangle New Delhi’s diplomatic positioning with Islamabad.

The appointment underscores the strategic weight Trump places on India at a time of tariff tensions, shifting alliances, and rising competition with China in the Indo-Pacific.
