The Justice Department memo stating no “client list” in Epstein Files outraged Trump’s supporters who now claim betrayal

By TRH Global Affairs Desk

NEW DELHI, July 18, 2025 — US President Donald Trump is embroiled in a firestorm of controversy as his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files sparks outrage among his MAGA base. Supporters accused him of betrayal and demanded transparency. The controversy has exposed deep rifts within the movement, with some of Trump’s most loyal followers openly criticizing his actions.

The Justice Department published a memo stating there is no “client list” related to Epstein and reaffirming his death as a suicide. This has outraged many of Trump’s supporters who had been led to believe that the files would reveal significant information. Trump has attempted to downplay the issue, calling it a “hoax” and blaming Democrats, but this has not quelled the dissent. At the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, attendees booed when asked if they were satisfied with the Epstein investigation, reflecting the widespread distrust among Trump’s base.

ABC News reported that “Ever since Jeffrey Epstein took his life in a federal jail in 2019, conservative voices have been calling on the federal government to be transparent about what they know.” PBS noted that “President Donald Trump outraged many of his supporters after the Justice Department published an unsigned memo saying it would not release any files related to Epstein.” The Guardian highlighted that “President’s latest effort to contain fallout comes after he directs Pam Bondi to request release of grand jury transcripts and threatens to sue The Wall Street Journal.” NPR covered Trump’s threat to sue The Wall Street Journal for reporting on his past ties to Epstein.

Infighting Within MAGA Camp

The controversy has exposed deep divisions within the MAGA movement. Influencers like Laura Loomer have called for Attorney General Pam Bondi’s resignation and demanded a special counsel, stating, “I don’t think that she has been transparent or done a good job handling this issue.” On X, users have expressed their outrage, with @ThePanicanKing posting, “Donald Trump just betrayed his own base to such an astronomical magnitude that it is breath taking.” Another user, @patriottakes, noted that “MAGA isn’t getting what they voted for,” referring to Trump’s campaign promise to release the Epstein files. Elon Musk has also weighed in, promising to release the files if his party comes to power, further stoking the controversy.

Jeffrey Epstein, a financier and convicted sex offender, died in a New York jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges. His death, officially ruled a suicide, and his connections to high-profile figures, including Trump, have long stoked conspiracy theories. Trump and Epstein had a long-standing social relationship, with Trump describing Epstein as a “terrific guy” in a 2002 interview. They were neighbours in Palm Beach, Florida, and attended social events together, including at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. However, their relationship soured around 2004 when they competed for a real estate property.
