New Delhi, May 4, 2025 — US President Donald Trump in an unequivocal term has said that he would not allow Iran to possess nuclear weapon. Trump hinted in an interview to NBC News that he wouldn’t be buying the “civilian energy” bargain of Iran.
The US and Iran are engaged in talks, brokered by Oman. The two nations have exchanged notes on nuclear issue.
In a wide-ranging interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker at his Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said: “I think that I would be open to hearing it, you know? Civilian energy, it’s called. But you know, civilian energy often leads to military wars.”
Trump further elaborated, saying that “and we don’t want to have them have a nuclear weapon. It’s a very simple deal.”
The US-Iran talks have now been delayed amid reports that the axing of Mike Waltz from the post of the National Security Advisor has cast doubts on the next round of talks with Tehran. Waltz, a staunch pro-Israel, favoured military action to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear bombs, said reports.
Tehran, meanwhile, has asserted that the Islamic nation would continue to pursue uranium enrichment programme. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in a post on social media on Saturday said: “Iran has every right to possess the full nuclear fuel cycle.”
Middle East envoy of the US Steve Witkoff now is the top interlocuter in the Trump administration in negotiations with Iran. Middle East experts have noted Witkoff’s personal relations with the royal family members of Saudi Arabia. They also argue that Saudi Arabia may also pressure the US to stop Iran from pursuing the nuclear programme.
Trump has entrusted US Secretary of the State Marco Rubio with the additional responsibility of the national security advisor. With Trump also echoing the Waltz advocacy of complete dismantling of the nuclear programme of Iran, the next round of talk between Washington and Tehran now appear to be clouded.
Yet, Trump has been maintaining that there will be a deal with Iran. Israel is closely watching the US-Iran talks. Rubio told Fox News on Thursday that the US will not agree to Iran enriching uranium in an affirmation of Israel’s position.
“The only countries in the world that enrich uranium are the ones that have nuclear weapons,” Rubio told Fox News. Araghchi on the other hand reiterated Iran’s right under NPT (Nuclear non-proliferation treaty) to enrich uranium for civilian energy purposes.
