Trump Endorses Steve Bannon’s claims on Israel-Iran ceasefire

NEW DELHI, June 25, 2025 – US President Donald Trump stirred controversy on Wednesday by describing the recently concluded Israel-Iran war as “a tremendous victory for everybody, including Iran.” Trump also said that “Israel was hit hard very badly in the last couple of days.”
Trump’s remarks endorsed his former advisor Steve Bannon who alleged that the ceasefire between Israel and Iran was primarily intended to “save Israel.” In an explosive appearance on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle, Bannon claimed Israeli forces were overwhelmed and running out of defence options.
He accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—referred to as “Bibi”—of misleading the United States. “They bit off more than they could chew,” Bannon said. He described a “brutal” day for Israeli civilians in Tel Aviv and Beersheba during Iran’s missile retaliation. Trump also said that Israel took severe beatings from the Iranian missiles, as “buildings were hit.”
Bannon said Israel was running out of defensive missiles. “The Iron Dome was stretched to the limit. They couldn’t sustain the fight,” he added. Iran had launched more than 500 ballistic missiles and 1,000 drones during the 12-day conflict.
Speaking to reporters as he departed for the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump reiterated his view, stating, “We won a tremendous victory, but it was also a great victory for Iran.” The US President’s remarks highlight his claim that the US airstrikes “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities. This is despite an initial US intelligence assessment suggesting the strikes only set back Tehran’s nuclear program by months.
Trump also noted the heavy toll on Israel, saying, “Israel has been hit very hard, especially in the last few days,” referencing ballistic missile strikes that damaged buildings and killed civilians, including four in Beersheba. Yet, he framed the outcome as a win for all parties, suggesting Iran retained its sovereignty and avoided further destruction.
Trump, however, lauded Netanyahu, saying “he did a great job.” The US President also heaped praise on Iran. “They’ve gone through hell. They had had it. They’ve oil. They will build on it. They can have some defence.” Said Trump, in his remarks to reporters.
Trump claimed that Iran and Israel “had reached out to him almost simultaneously for peace.” Trump had announced phased ceasefire. But reports said Qatar played a major role in mediating between Iran and the US.
