NEW DELHI, June 12, 2025 – US President Donald Trump expressed condolences and offered immediate assistance to India after the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew en route to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential area moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 p.m. IST. Death toll has climbed to 290 per media reports.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump described the incident as “one of the worst in aviation history” and emphasized US readiness to aid India. “The plane crash was terrible. I’ve already told them, anything we can do, we’ll be over there immediately. But it was a horrific crash,” he said.
Trump also noted he had offered “a couple of pointers” to Indian authorities but did not elaborate on specifics. Trump also stated that “engines may have lost power.”
Reports said that the ill-fated plane had run the full runway length before the takeoff. But the plane couldn’t gain height, and began descending soon after. The ill-fated plane was powered by twin engines. Reports also pointed to landing gears pointing downwards.
The NTSB will be leading a team of US investigators travelling to India to assist the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau with its investigation into the crash of Air India Boeing 787.
Boeing in a statement said: “We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them. Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected.”
The flight, which included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, crashed into a doctors’ hostel at B.J. Medical College, causing significant casualties among medical students and staff. Authorities reported at least 204 bodies recovered, with 41 others injured. One passenger, British-Indian Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, reportedly survived and is receiving treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy “heartbreaking beyond words,” while the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) launched a probe with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed its readiness to provide technical support.
