New Delhi, May 13, 2026 — US President Donald Trump in his first visit to China in nine years will seek firm trade and investment commitment from Beijing. Trump-Xi Summit on Friday is likely to be the top geopolitics event as the US signals escalation of conflicts with Iran.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump gave casual remarks when asked if he would seek support of China in ending the Iran War. Trump said that any cooperation in the wake of achieving objectives is welcome.
Trump on Wednesday posted a map wherein he described Venezuela as the 51st State of America. China and Venezuela were strategic partner nations until Trump ordered “arrest” of then President Nicolás Maduro. Trump’s Venezuela as the 51st State of the US may set the backdrop to his China visit with signals to Beijing that Trumpism has not been affected by the setbacks in the ongoing military conflicts with Iran. Tehran and Beijing are also strategic partners.
Analysts argued that Trump will be more interested to seek visible and firm investment commitments from China in the US. The bitter trade war between the US and China until two nations struck a deal had soured bilateral ties.
With China diligently exploiting leverages in chips and rare earths to bring the US on talking terms to the comforts of Beijing, Xi per analysts is likely to hold his grounds and call for deescalation — in trade and military wars. Analysts also stressed that Trump will not cause discomfort to Xi by raising issues such as human rights in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, while also not dragging the Summit into the Taiwan affairs.
Trump is likely to get some numbers, running into billions of dollars, as Chinese commitments for investments in the US. That will in turn become his talking point for the MAGA constituency. The US-based commentators stressed that Trump faces the challenge to deal with the issue of job losses due to manufacturing shift to China.
Trump often says that he has warm relations with Xi. The two leaders had last met on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in Busan in South Korea last year. The Summit had taken place amid strained relations between the two nations due to the trade war. But the US Supreme Court of the US has held Trump’s tariff measures illegal. Analysts believe that China has an edge over the US as Trump meets Xi in Beijing.
