TikTok Begins Restoration of Service After Trump Assurance

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, January 21: The short-video platform TikTok has begun restoration of services in the US. Within 24-hour of going dark, the video sharing platform is making a comeback in the US.

“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity,” TikTok said in a statement on the social media platform X on Monday. It also thanked Trump for “assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive”.

On the day when TikTok went dark, Trump posted a message on his social media platform Truth Social with ‘SAVE TIKTOK’ as the key words. He promised to issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law takes effect.

The US banned TikTok under the law passed by the Congress. The Supreme Court of the US also upheld the law while rejecting the challenge of the social media platform.

Trump has asserted that there will be 50 per cent ownership of TikTok by an American entity. He also stated that there would be no liability for companies that helped keep TikTok from going dark.

“It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States,” said TikTok in the statement.

TikTok is owned by Chinese media company ByteDance. A report said that TikTok had a revenue of $16 billion from operations in the US.

Incidentally, TikTok is banned in China. The video sharing platform is also banned in India, as well as several other countries.

“The law passed by Congress last year gave TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance until January 19 to divest from TikTok or be cut off from U.S. app stores and hosting services. TikTok said a sale wasn’t possible and challenged the law in court, but it was rejected by a unanimous Supreme Court on Friday,” said CBS News in a report on Monday.

“Americans deserve to see our exciting Inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations. I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to say up,” added Trump in his social media post.

Without U.S. approval, there is no Tik Tok, said Trump, adding: “With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars – maybe trillions.”
