No imminent threat. No UN resolution. No congressional vote. Just another Middle East war, says the Massachusetts Democrat.

New Delhi, March 5, 2026 — Representative Jim McGovern delivered one of the sharpest attacks on the Trump administration’s Iran War during the House floor debate on the war resolution, accusing Republicans of mass gaslighting and branding the conflict a repeat of the Iraq WMD disaster.

“I went to the classified briefing. There was no imminent threat,” McGovern said bluntly, dismantling the White House’s core justification for launching military operations against Tehran.

McGovern turned his fire directly on Republican consistency — or the lack of it. “Republicans can’t answer because they were against war with Iran until exactly the second Donald Trump decided to go to war. And now they’re all running around sounding like neocon lunatics,” he said.

The Massachusetts Democrat recalled Trump’s own campaign promises. “Why did he campaign on swearing he would never send American kids to fight and die in the Middle East?” McGovern asked, framing the Iran War as a direct betrayal of the America First platform that swept Trump back to the White House.

On the legal question, McGovern was unambiguous. With no congressional authorisation and no UN Security Council resolution, he argued, “this war is illegal no matter what you want to call it.” He added that no after-the-fact congressional vote could retroactively legitimise a war launched without an imminent threat.

Drawing a direct parallel to the 2003 Iraq invasion, McGovern said: “I still remember the lies about WMD. I voted against that war too. At least George Bush had the decency to lie to people’s face.”

He closed with a class argument that cut to the bone. “It’s not Donald Trump’s kids that will have to go fight and die for their draft-dodging dad. It’s working class kids who are going to put their lives on the line.”

The Senate resolution was defeated with a narrow margin which sought Trump to seek Congressional approval for further waging the Iran War. After a spirited debate, the resolution was defeated 52:48. But voices within the US are questioning the Trump administration for rushing into the Iran War. Senators also questioned claims made last year by Trump that all nuclear capabilities of Iran had been destroyed.
