New Delhi, December 14, 2025 — A mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney has killed at least 10–12 people and injured dozens more, including police officers, in what authorities are treating as a terrorist attack targeting Jewish Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence as “evil unleashed and beyond comprehension,” saying an attack on Jewish Australians is “an attack on every Australian.” Albanese vowed that such violence and hate will be eliminated.
The shooting erupted Sunday evening near Bondi Park Playground during a public lighting ceremony for the first night of Hanukkah, drawing crowds of families and worshippers. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots as people scattered in panic.
New South Wales Police say two suspects are in custody — one gunman was killed at the scene while the other is critically injured and detained. Authorities also discovered an improvised explosive device near a pedestrian bridge and maintain a large police operation in the area.
At least 29 people are now reported injured, including two officers, and emergency services are treating multiple victims in hospitals across Sydney. Scenes of chaos and fear — with bystanders fleeing and fellow citizens confronting attackers — have underscored the magnitude of the tragedy.
Israeli leaders and Jewish organisations worldwide have condemned the attack as antisemitic terrorism, urging global action against rising hate crimes.
Police continue their investigation and have urged the public to avoid the Bondi Beach area and comply with instructions from law enforcement as they piece together the motive and affiliations behind the assault.
