New Delhi, November 10, 2025 — At least ten people were killed and 24 injured after a high-intensity explosion ripped through a slow-moving car near Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, sending shockwaves across Old Delhi’s densely crowded lanes.

The blast, which occurred at 6:52 pm near Gate No. 1 of the Lal Qila Metro Station, triggered a massive fire that gutted six cars, two e-rickshaws, and an autorickshaw, according to officials. The explosion was powerful enough to shatter glass windows several metres away and was reportedly heard as far as ITO.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as flames engulfed vehicles and smoke filled the air near Lajpat Rai Market, one of the city’s busiest trading hubs. “Bodies and debris were scattered everywhere,” said a trader from the Chandni Chowk Traders’ Association, which later shared videos showing the scale of destruction.

Ten fire tenders were rushed to the site, and the blaze was brought under control by 7:29 pm, officials said.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that the explosion originated from a slow-moving vehicle stopped at the Red Fort traffic signal. “A car stopped at the signal and exploded. Some people have died, and others have been injured,” Golcha told PTI, adding that forensic and explosive experts from the FSL and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had joined the investigation.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle involved was a Hyundai i20. An injured autorickshaw driver, Zeeshan, told PTI: “The car in front of me was about two feet away. I don’t know whether there was a bomb in it or something else, but it exploded.”

Asianet News reported that the blast’s impact was so severe that nearby parked vehicles were completely charred. Police cordoned off the area as rescue operations continued into the evening.

The explosion came on a day when, according to journalist Rahul Shivshankar, authorities had carried out a “major crackdown on terror modules plotting a strike on Delhi.” Security has since been tightened across the National Capital Region, with Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh placed on high alert, journalist Anish Singh reported on X.

While investigators have yet to determine whether the blast was an accidental explosion or a planned attack, senior officials said the Home Minister was briefed through the evening and the situation remains under close watch.

As night fell over the capital, the Red Fort area — usually bustling with evening shoppers and tourists — stood sealed and silent, its historic silhouette framed against the glow of emergency lights.
