Wellington, April 10, 2025: In an address at the Convocation Ceremony of the 80th Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington, Union Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh underscored the need for the Indian Armed Forces to operate jointly and remain future-ready in a rapidly evolving global security environment.

Addressing officers from India and 26 friendly nations, Singh stressed that domains such as cyber, space, and information warfare are now as critical as traditional combat operations. “The Armed Forces must operate jointly and remain future-ready in today’s ever-evolving multi-domain environment,” said Singh.

He also said that “cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and economic warfare are now potent tools that can achieve military objectives without a single bullet being fired”. Singh stressed on three key shifts redefining global geopolitics: a renewed emphasis on national security, a technological tsunami sweeping across sectors, and the fast pace of innovation.

Singh asserted that “the Modi Government is committed to transforming India’s Armed Forces into a technologically advanced, combat-ready force capable of integrated operations across all domains”.

“Artificial Intelligence, drones, and space-based assets are no longer the future — they are the present,” he said, citing lessons from the Russia-Ukraine conflict where drones played a decisive role in altering battlefield dynamics.

The Minister also drew attention to the challenges India faces along its borders, including proxy war and terrorism from neighbouring regions, compounded by non-traditional threats such as climate change and natural disasters.

“PM Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047 is anchored on two strong pillars: Surakshit Bharat (Secure India) and Sashakt Bharat (Empowered India),” said Singh, adding that military transformation is crucial to achieving this national vision.

He strongly advocated for self-reliance in defence manufacturing, calling it a “strategic necessity” and not a choice. “We must build a resilient, indigenous defence ecosystem and lead in developing low-cost, high-tech solutions to stay ahead,” said Singh.

He also emphasized the need for whole-of-nation synergy, combining military strength with diplomatic, economic, technological, and informational strategies to ensure national security.

Reflecting on India’s growing global stature, Shri Singh referred to the Prime Minister’s ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) for collective security and prosperity in the Global South.

“Today, global challenges must be met through mutual interests and synergies,” he stated. In a message to the 479 participating officers, including 38 from 26 friendly countries, Singh spelt out a five-point leadership mantra based on the five ‘A’s: Awareness of the evolving environment, Ability to acquire the necessary skills, Adaptability to change, Agility to act swiftly, and Ambassadorship as role models within society and the services.

Singh also stated that “Tomorrow’s battlefield will demand leaders who can adapt rapidly, think innovatively, and harness technology effectively”.
