New Delhi, December 12, 2025 — While China is seeking affirmation of ‘One China’ policy, Slovakia has seemingly gone steps to please Beijing. In its strategy paper, released this week, Slovakia just made Taiwan vanish from the English map.
“Slovakia just released its new Indo Pacific strategy. While a full evaluation of the document will still require some time, one issue warrants our immediate attention—the glaring erasure of Taiwan from one of the maps in the English version of the document,’ wrote Matej Šimalčík, an Asia observer on LinkedIn.
The episode has come amid China asking allies to make a firm statement of support. Japan Prime Minister Sanae Tikaichi’s remarks in parliament on Taiwan has sent Beijing asking allies to commit to ‘One China’ Policy assertively.
“While all circumstances point to this being a technical glitch (Taiwan is mentioned in the text several times, as well as kept in its real geographic position in the other maps), this situation is symbolic of how the current Slovak administration treats Taiwan under the ‘all-azimuth foreign policy’,” added Šimalčík in his post.
The analyst rued that while Slovakia’s top partner in East Asia once used to be Taiwan, the situations have now changed. “Since Robert Fico took over the government in late 2023, Taiwan now receives virtually no attention from Slovak officials, who instead pursue (once again) naive pro-China pragmatism, devoid of political values—and even worse so—without any tangible results for Slovakia,” he added.
