Syria’s New Rulers Warm Up to West & Diaspora
Syria Now on Path to Reconstruction, says HTS’ Golani

New Delhi, December 11: Syria’s new rulers have said that the western nations need not worry about the ouster of Bashar al-Assad from power. Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) leader Abu Mohammed Al-Golani has said that the West needs not to fear the new regime in Damascus.
Golani in an interview to Sky News claimed that Syria has now embarked on the path of stability. Syria’s interim Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir also told an Italian media outlet that the new administration will protect all sects in Syria.
Golani and Bashir spoke to the western media outlets in a coordinated manner to assuage that the new regime in Syria will work with the western powers. Bashir also appealed to the Syrian diaspora to return to the country.
“The West has no reason to fear Syria,” Golani told Sky News in an interview, which was a first for any western media outlet. His group is designated as a terrorist organisation by the US.
He stated that “Syria is now on a path toward development, reconstruction, and stability”. Golani spoke to Zein Jaafar and Celine Al-Khaldi of Sky News in Damascus after Assad fled to Russia. The former ruler of Syria has got an asylum in Russia on humanitarian ground.
The Middle East commentators claim that Golani is rebranding his image as a moderate. Bashir is now leading an interim government. However, videos doing the rounds on the internet show that the HTS rebels are killing people on the street. Reports said that they are also killing former officials who worked with Assad.
Bashir told the Italian media outlet that “Syrians who had sought refuge abroad should return to their homeland”. “Now that Assad has been ousted, the people who had left the country because of him should come back and help the reconstruction of Syria,” Bashir told the Italian media outlet.
Golani stressed that Syria doesn’t want any war. His remarks came amid reports of the HTS rebels launching attacks on areas controlled by Kurds. Minority groups such as Kurds, Alawites, and Christians have expressed fear of persecutions with the rise of HTS in Syria.
Golani had formerly been with the Daesh of Iraq. He was also with Al-Qaeda’s Syrian arm. A section of Syrian observers claim that the US and Israel had made inroads into Syrian arm of Al-Qaeda.
