Syrian Massacres Steamroll Amid Western Silence

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, March 10: After three days of manslaughter in Syria, US Secretary of the State Marco Rubio called for accountability from Damascus. In unabated mayhem, over a thousand civilians have been butchered in Syria.

Sickening videos and images of the Syrian massacres of the minority Alawites went viral three days ago. Statements emerged attributed to the new ruler of Syria, President Ahmed al-Sharaa, that “remnants of the regime (Bashar al-Assad) will be defeated”. Videos showed soldiers of al-Sharaa trooping to “finish off” the regime remnants.

“The time of amnesty and forgiveness has ended, and the stage of liberation and purification begins,” al-Sharaa was quoted having said. Subsequently, “Syrian regime forces led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched artillery strikes on Coastal Shield Brigade positions in Latakia” per reports.

HTS-led units reportedly used locally made ‘Zu’am’ unguided artillery rockets in the attack. Videos of the fresh breakouts showed the HTS soldiers dragging bodies of killed fighters of Assad on the street.

Historian Edward N Luttwak in a blunt comment on X said: “The killings in Syria’s ‘coastal zone (a NYTimes neologism)’ are in fact the killings of Alawites by the new rulers. For Sunnis, Alawite sins are many including not actually Muslim (metempsychosis doctrine & wine) + they enriched themselves under fellow Alawite Assad.”

Amid gruesome killings of Alawites, Luttwak sought to slam the western silence and doublespeak. Several Tik-Tok videos have gone viral in which the people are celebrating killings of Alawites. They even offer suggestions – “dump bodies on mountains for dogs to eat” and “throw their bodies into the sea”. Such videos are shown emanating from European capitals.

Syria Slips into Civil War as Fierce Fights Break Out

ABC News in a broadcast said that “the death toll is now more than 1,300, and most of the victims are civilians”. Lama Hasan of the ABC News spotlighted Rubio’s condemnation of “the radical Islamist terrorists, including foreign jihadis that murdered people in western Syria”. The broadcaster warned that “some of the images may be disturbing”.

Zvi B’rel wrote in Israeal’s Haaretz, warning that Syria may slip into post-Saddam Hussain Iraq. “If not stopped, Syria could mirror post-Saddam Iraq,” he said in a stern warning, adding that “army holdouts joined al-Qaida, fueling a bloody civil war” in Iraq.

Sections of Middle East experts state that Israel had been arming the new ruler of Syria for years. Tulsi Gabbard, newly appointed director of the national intelligence of the US, in her Congressional confirmation hearing opening remarks had accused the Joe Biden administration of partnering with “jihadists in Syria affiliated to al-Qaeda”. After ouster of al-Assad, balkanization of Syria has been feared.

But Israel now has changed tack to turn the heat on Europe over the Syrian massacres of civilians. “Europe must not fail in reading the reality. It must wake up. It must stop granting legitimacy to a regime whose first actions — unsurprising given its well-known terrorist background — are these atrocities,” said the Israeli foreign affairs minister Gideon Sa’ar in a post on X. For perspective, several of the European nations had put Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the dock for killings in Gaza.

Two days ago, Chinese foreign affairs minister Wang Yi had warned that the world risks facing the “rule of jungle”. He spoke in the context of the American “bullying” of others. This will set a template, Wang suggested in a presser on the sidelines of ‘Two Sessions’.
