Warring Treasury, Opposition Lock Parliament in Gridlock

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, December 10: Temperature in New Delhi has sharply plunged with overnight rains. The people as matter of relief can now breathe. Yet, the people have been taken by surprise with the sudden onset of freezing cold.

The late evening shivering reminds of approaching mid-December. The minimum temperature in the queen of the hills Shimla plunged to minus five and a half degrees. Warmth is indeed the visible casualty as icy cold wind sweeps through the Raisina Hill, the abode of parliament and power in New Delhi.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the lower house of parliament within sixty seconds. The Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar is at the centre stage of the scorching anger of the Opposition.

The Opposition in the Rajya Sabha is highly likely to move an impeachment resolution against Dhankar. The Opposition principally accuses him of favouritism.

The Opposition most importantly is accusing presiding officers of allowing the treasury to level outlandish accusations against key opponents. Yet, they almost become stern headmaster when the Opposition seeks to test the patience of the treasury.

“Sadan maryada se hi chalega (Parliament will function with decorum only),” announced Birla on Tuesday before summarily adjourning the Lok Sabha till noon. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Godda Lok Sabha seat Nishikant Dubey last week accused leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi of levelling allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group at the behest of George Soros.

That accusation from Dubey poured icy waters on faint glimpses of warmth in parliament to finally resume normal businesses after days of disruptions. Gandhi is livid. He interviewed two Opposition MPs wearing masks of Modi and Adani on ways their allegedly do “businesses”.

“The government is not interested in running the businesses of parliament. Each day, the government manufactures alibis to get houses adjourned,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told reporters on Tuesday.

Wearing a flowing winter gown, Vadra expressed exasperation at lack of discussions in parliament. She is yet to make her maiden speech in parliament.

The Congress circle has been abuzz with murmurs that the party’s top campaigners had disproportionately been busy in Wayanad Lok Sabha byelections at the cost of Maharashtra and Jharkhand electioneering. Vadra contested her first election from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat and won with huge margin of votes.

The treasury also appears not pressed with urgency to get the two houses of parliament in order. The key legislative agenda of the BJP to gain parliamentary sanction for Waqf Board Amendment Bill now stands postponed till the middle of the next year. Big elections are already behind the wall now. The Winter session of parliament is now headed for a washout as the treasury and the Opposition accord prominence to politics.
