New Delhi, August 1: Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, is now a secretary in Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva has appointed Basuri Swaraj as the state secretary of the party from New Delhi area.
Bansuri Swaraj will be part of the team of state secretaries which also includes Harish Khurana, son of former chief minister of Delhi Madan Lal Khurana. Sachdeva on Tuesday unveiled his team of the office bearers.
Bansuri Swaraj has been taking up the legal works of the party, sources said, who added that the daughter of Sushma Swaraj has been active in the politics of the national capital. Bansuri Swaraj had also pleaded before the Supreme Court yesterday on behalf of a petitioner to argue the case of the alleged violence against women in West Bengal during the panchayat elections.
However, Bansuri Swaraj could not cut ice with her arguments made before the bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who scoffed at the idea of comparing the violence against women in Manipur with similar incidents in other states.
While Bansuri Swaraj has made into the team of the office bearers of the Delhi BJP from New Delhi area, there has also been a buzz that the incumbent Lok Sabha MP from the constituency Meenakshi Lekhi may find it tough to bag renomination for the parliamentary elections in 2024. The BJP is likely to test Bansuri Swaraj in electoral politics, but the party may not take a chance with her for the Lok Sabha elections, sources added.
Sachdeva has appointed seven vice presidents and three general secretaries in his team of the office bearers. While the Delhi unit of the BJP is stated to be packed with leaders with Punjabi origin, Sachdeva has sought to counter the suggestion by making regional balances in the team of vice presidents, which are essentially ceremonial posts in the affairs of the party.
Harsh Malhotra, Yogendra Chandolia, and Kamaljeet Sahrawat are the Delhi unit general secretaries. Sachdeva, incidentally, had to wait for months to get a green signal from the BJP headquarters to unveil his team, which will oversee the party’s poll preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2025 Assembly polls in the national capital.
