Supreme Solutions

Politicians have a knack of accepting Supreme Court judgments with utmost humility, and The Pioneer in its Editorial has advised to check their wont of taking their disputes to the court. The daily said that realpolitik, and not moralpolitik, drives the Maharashtra politics.

Maharashtra’s former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanded resignation from his successor Eknath Shinde after the top court ruled that all three key actors – Governor, Shiv Sena chief whip and the state Assembly Speaker – had erred in their respective decisions. The Noida-based daily wondered why the political actors cannot play by the rule books, arguing that the extent of powers of the Delhi government should have been obvious.

The Supreme Court verdict on Maharashtra is essentially an essay on an event, for the bench of the five judges took refuge to seek a much larger bench to address core issues, of the power of the Speaker. On Delhi, the apex court nailed the head of political slugfest to chop off wild weeds that had grown on governance.

Unparalleled Opportunities

While Indian television studios are busy in peddling stupidity of political fringe elements, once in a century diplomatic actions are taking place, which may set course of the world politics for the next few decades. The Economic Times in its Editorial believes that India has a moment of unparalleled opportunities, as National Security Advisor Ajit Doval shared notes with his counterparts from the US, Saudi Arabia and the UAE where among other matters a trans-continental rail connectivity project was on the paper.

The business daily called for an out of the box thinking to leverage the low middle-income economy status to grab the emerging opportunities. It also noted China’s foreign policy outreach to buttress anti-US and anti-West alliance.

Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi held talks with his US counterpart, while Beijing has unleashed an aggressive foreign policy to gain allies in Europe, West Asia and Latin America. Qin Gang is seen in some foreign capital every other day. To tap the “unparalleled opportunities”, India may have to first match the Chinese agility and depth in the foreign policy.

Chess & Football

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has almost wrapped his political tourism, doing an East-West and South-North travel, to connect with most of the Opposition leaders. The Asian Age has said in its Editorial that Opposition is playing football, with the likes of MK Stalin, K Chandrashekhar Rao, Mamata Banerjee, and Kumar kicking the football (Opposition unity) around, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plays the chess (political mind game).

The daily has claimed that the Opposition will need to revive the 1989 efforts when they had taken on late Rajiv Gandhi, as the political situation is almost similar with Narendra Modi in the saddle.

Late Vishwanath Pratap Singh was the rallying point of the Opposition unity in 1989, who at that time commanded an unblemished image. Kumar begged Sharad Pawar of the NCP to head the Opposition. But even Pawar is politically a spent force, who cannot douse raging fire within his political clan.
