China Streams ‘Northwestern Years’ to Spotlight Life of Xi Jinping’s Father

New Delhi, November 7: Two days ago, Chinese television began streaming the ‘extraordinary achievements’ of Xi Zhongxun as a part of a 40-episode historical drama. China’s Mango TV is broadcasting the 40-episode drama on the life of senior Xi.

Xi Zhongxun was father of the incumbent Chinese President Xi Jinping. The historical drama is called ‘Northwestern Years’. It traces the path of Xi Zhongxun for 25 years in the Northwest of China.

From 1927 to 1952, the life of Xi Zhongxun took dramatic turns. Beginning as a peasant, he rose to head the local government.

His son-led regime in Beijing is now ensuring that the people in China fully acquaint themselves with the extraordinary life of Xi Zhongxun. To this effect, the 40-episode is streaming not just on Mango TV but also on CCTV-1, Tencent Video, and iQiyi.

The 40-episode has been dubbed as a historical drama by Chinese dailies. “The play praises Xi Zhongxun’s extraordinary experiences and great achievements during his 25 years in the Northwest from 1927 to 1952,” said Hong Kong’s Sing Tao in a report on the historical drama.

Jin Dong who is a popular actor in China is essaying the role of Xi Zhongxun. Wu Lei is essaying the role of young Xi Zhongxun. Actress Ni Ni is essaying the role of Xi Jinping’s mother Qi Xin.

The daily also stated in its report that ‘Northwestern Years’ is the first television adaptation of the life story of Xi Zhongxun. Sing Tao stated that ‘Northwest Years’ mainly shows Xi Zhongxun’s revolutionary journey from a poor peasant boy to a leader. The daily stated that Xi Zhongxun “shoulders heavy responsibilities and is in charge of the government in the latter years of his life”.

“The story focuses on Xi Zhongxun mobilizing the masses to create a revolutionary base in the Shaanxi-Gansu border area. He guards the north and south gates of the border area,” stated the daily in its report about the historical drama.

The life story of Xi Jinping’s father also says that he “worked with Peng Dehuai to defend the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, correcting deviations in land reform”. He is also credited to have solved ethnic and religious issues.

The iconic accounts of Xi Zhongxun also depicts him playing a lead role in developing the economy and culture of the northwest during his time in power in the northwest. “His experience and great achievements have created a vivid artistic image of being loyal to the party, adhering to his beliefs, seeking truth from facts, reaching out to the masses, and living up to the people,” added the daily in its report.

The historical drama also dwells upon the early struggles in the northwest region of China after the failure of the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party.

The ‘extraordinary achievements of Xi Zhongxun is streaming in the third term of his son as President of China. Xi Jinping assumed the third term at the helm of China after allegedly purging several of his rivals.
