New Delhi, February 25: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta on Tuesday suspended the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for creating din in the House. The AAP MLAs were protesting during the address of Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena in the House.
Gupta summoned marshals in the House to evict the protesting AAP MLAs. Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and her colleague were suspended from the House.
The Assembly Speaker brings marshals in the House to evict MLAs after a motion to suspend is adopted. The motion to suspend MLAs is brought by minister in-charge of parliamentary affairs.
As an Opposition leader when the AAP had brute majority in the Assembly, Gupta often faced House evictions. On several occasions, Gupta was evicted from the House by marshals called by the Chair.
After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in Delhi, the AAP got taste of own recipe in the Assembly. The AAP MLAs began protests from the day one by claiming that photographs of BR Ambedkar have been replaced in the Assembly.
Atishi led the protests of the AAP MLAs. She also rallied the AAP MLAs to protest during the address of Saxena in the House.
Former Delhi Chief Minister has been on an aggressive drive from day one of the three-day-long Assembly session. On day one, Atishi, who is leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, also led protests for delay in the implementation of the ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojna’ promised by the BJP during the election campaign.
Atishi has asked the BJP government in Delhi to implement the scheme under which women will get ₹2500 per month. Delhi Chief Minister in a media statement has said that the AAP government emptied the exchequer with “misgovernance”.
Adopting an aggressive stance, Atishi is seeking to present herself as a firebrand leader of the AAP. In the absence of the AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia, Atishi is the top leader of the party in the Delhi Assembly.
The AAP leaders argued that Atishi’s aggression in the Delhi Assembly is aimed at boosting the morale of the party leaders. The AAP is also war of loss of workers’ base in the aftermath of the poll loss in Delhi.
