Rahul Gandhi says the drinking water crisis in Indore exposes a failed urban model, alleges deaths, illness, and government negligence

By TRH News Desk

Bhopal, January 17, 2026 —Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led governments over what he described as a deepening drinking water crisis in Indore, questioning the credibility of India’s much-touted “Smart Cities” model.

Addressing the media in Indore after meeting affected families, Gandhi said residents had fallen ill and some had allegedly died after consuming contaminated water. “I have met the affected people. Their family members have died, many have become seriously ill. This is being called a new model of smart cities—but there is no drinking water here,” he said.

Gandhi alleged that fear was being used to silence families and claimed that even in Indore—often showcased as a model city—people are unable to access clean drinking water. “People are drinking water and dying. This is not limited to Indore. The same situation exists in other cities as well,” he said.

Holding the government responsible, Gandhi said providing clean water and reducing pollution are basic state obligations. “Someone approved this work. Someone is responsible. The government must take responsibility,” he said, demanding compensation for families affected by what he termed government negligence.

He also warned that temporary fixes were being implemented only because national attention was focused on the issue. “The water tank has been turned into a symbol. A band-aid solution is being applied because the media is watching. Once attention shifts, the situation will return to what it was,” Gandhi said, calling for a systematic, permanent solution to ensure safe drinking water.

Rejecting accusations of political opportunism, Gandhi said his visit was not about politics. “People have died. People don’t have clean water. As Leader of the Opposition, it is my duty to stand with them. Call it politics if you want—I am here to support them,” he said.
