Raj Bhawan marks one year of Governor Mathur’s service amid grassroots outreach and commitment to constitutional values

August 1, 2025 — The picturesque lawns of Raj Bhawan turned into a venue of pride and celebration as Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang joined a distinguished gathering for ‘Utkarsh Utsav’, an event marking the first anniversary of Governor Om Prakash Mathur’s tenure as the constitutional head of Sikkim.

Describing the past year as “a period of pride and privilege,” the Chief Minister commended the Governor’s visionary leadership, deep commitment to democratic values, and efforts to foster inclusive governance. “It has been a remarkable journey under the wise and compassionate guidance of the Hon’ble Governor,” CM Tamang said, delivering his address before an audience that included top judicial, legislative, and administrative dignitaries.

“Gaon Mein Governor” Lauded as Model for Public Engagement

A highlight of the celebration was the Governor’s flagship initiative “Gaon Mein Governor”, which the Chief Minister described as a “trailblazing model of grassroots governance.” The programme, which connects the Raj Bhawan directly with village communities, was hailed as an instrument of transparency, accountability, and empathy in administration.

“Through this initiative, the Governor has not only stepped into our villages but also into the hearts of the people,” said CM Tamang.

The Chief Minister also praised Governor Mathur’s unwavering advocacy for women’s empowerment, encapsulated in his vision statement “Empowered Women, Empowered Nation.” The Governor’s emphasis on education, discipline, and moral development of children was noted as a foundation for a stronger and more conscious future generation.

“He inspires confidence in our youth, pride in our identity, and unity in our efforts,” the CM remarked. Further, the Governor’s efforts in environmental stewardship, promotion of organic farming, and unwavering support for India’s armed forces were recognized as aligned with Sikkim’s values of sustainability, national pride, and resilience.

The celebration was attended by Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice Biswanath Somadder, Speaker M.N. Sherpa, Heads of Departments, senior bureaucrats, students, and members of civil society. The event was marked by cultural performances and emotional testimonials from citizens impacted by the Governor’s people-first approach.

“His Excellency has touched every section of society—from children to farmers, from tribal communities to policymakers. His year in office has been one of visible transformation,” a senior official remarked.

In conclusion, CM Tamang described Governor Mathur as “a guiding light for all of us”, and expressed hope that his journey ahead would continue to inspire good governance, social equity, and development.

As the Raj Bhawan echoed with applause and celebration, ‘Utkarsh Utsav’ stood as a testimony to leadership grounded in empathy, service, and constitutional commitment.
