Sikkim Disaster

Deccan Herald in its Editorial has slammed the practice of warning the scientific warnings in the Himalayas in the backdrop of glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF), which left 1200 MW Urja dam in debris, washing away 14 debris, with trails found in West Bengal and even Bangladesh. The Bengaluru-based daily noted the havoc created by the release of five million cubic metre waters from the dam. Several people have been killed in the dam burst disaster, as the daily lamented that there had been warning also, while fragile Himalayas remain vulnerable to the natural disasters as seen in Himachal Pradesh.

Sikkim is currently in the midst of the most unfortunate tragedy, and relief and rescue operations are underway. It may be worthwhile to reflect that the energy transition pattern is now more tilted towards solar power, and the scope for debate on dam-led power generation certainly exists.

Tracking Prices

The Indian Express in its Editorial noted that India may stay on a longer rate pause path after the Reserve Bank of India’s Monthly Policy Meeting voted 5-1 to hold the Repo Rate at 6.5 per cent, while the inflation data supported the decision with food inflation cooling to 9.94 per cent in August from 11.51 per cent in July, and inflation too coming down to 6.83 per cent in August from 7.44 per cent in July. The Noida-based daily also spotlighted that the RBI has kept the inflation forecast for the year unchanged at 5.4 per cent.

The daily ignored more critical aspect of the RBI commentary about the rapid rise in the personal loan segment. The RBI has called for scrutiny of personal loans aggressively sold by fintech firms.

Finding Education

The Tribune in its Editorial has spotlighted a strange case of a college in Himachal Pradesh opened without the necessary infrastructure where 90 per cent of the students flunked the examination. The Chandigarh-based daily cited the case of a college in Kupvi, a subdivision in Shimla, hurriedly opened by former Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur, where 70 students are said to be without teachers.

State of education in states is indeed worrisome, as the political dispensations remain busy with freebies to ignore the pressing needs such as healthcare, education and drinking water. In a time when unemployment evidently is high, the Himachal College running without teachers is most baffling.
