New Delhi, September 24: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Tuesday held talks with farmers’ leaders. The minister is seeking to address concerns of farmers amid ongoing protests at the Punjab-Haryana border. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana is also facing discontent on the campaign trails due to the farmers’ agitation.

“We had decided a few days ago that we will meet and discuss with farmer organizations and farmer brothers and sisters every Tuesday. In this direction, today we met farmer brothers from different farmer organizations at Pusa campus in New Delhi,” said Chauhan in a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

The minister stated that “meaningful discussions were held on various topics. Also, farmer friends praised the important decisions taken by the government in the direction of agriculture and farmer welfare.”

Chauhan stressed that the “farmer welfare is the top priority of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. “With coordinated and collective efforts, we will leave no stone unturned in the progress of farmers, we will move forward together. This sequence of dialogue will continue,” added Chauhan.

Many farmer organizations are protesting against the government on agriculture related issues and also to press for statutory minimum support price. Farmers’ organizations of Punjab and Haryana have been camping at Shambhu border for a month.

However, representatives of farmer organizations sitting at the Shambhu border of Haryana were not included in this meeting. During the meeting on Tuesday, representatives of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Non-political) from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab and Maharashtra participated.

The farmer organizations had camped on the borders of Delhi for almost a year against the three agricultural laws which were enacted by parliament. They were later withdrawn by the Central Government.

During the meeting, Chauhan said that the government has received many suggestions to strengthen the minimum support price system. He assured the farmers that all the suggestions will be considered.

Chauhan also said that an attempt will be made to implement the suggestions of the farmers by holding meeting with the officials.

The meeting assumes significance amid the ongoing Assembly elections in Haryana. The BJP is facing visible anti-incumbency in the state.
