New Delhi, November 25: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan along with wife Sadhna Singh offered prayers at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain on Friday evening. The Bharatiya Janata Party leaders are claiming that the chief minister has beaten his rival and Congress leader Kamal Nath in offering prayers at the Mahakal Temple.

The verdict of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections will come on December 3. But the political observers claim that Shivraj Singh Chauhan has taken a lead by being the first to offer the prayers at Mahakal Temple. Though there is no authentication of the fact, a section of Bhopal-based political observers claim that the first to offer prayers at Mahakal Temple also becomes the winner in the election. They claim that Kamal Nath had offered prayers at Mahakal Temple first after the votes were cast in the 2018 Assembly elections in the state.

Kamal Nath had offered prayers at the Mahakal Temple in August. He had also written a letter to the Mahakal, appealing to oust the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government. Kamal had alleged in the letter to the presiding deity that the BJP government was involved in corruption. However, Shivraj Singh Chauhan had told reporters that while Kamal Nath was offering prayers at the Mahakal Temple he should be asked why he had not fulfilled the promise to waive off the farmers’ loans in the state.

The BJP had lost the 2018 Assembly elections and Kamal Nath was appointed the chief minister of the state. However, Jotiraditya Scindia quit the Congress to join the BJP and his followers also changed sides. This helped the BJP to come back to power again in Madhya Pradesh. Shivraj Singh Chauhan had become the chief minister once more in 2020.

It may be recalled that the Congress had built its 2018 Assembly election in Madhya Pradesh around Mahakal Temple. The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had also offered prayers at the Mahakal Temple. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also offered prayers at the Mahakal Temple in 2019 and also in 2022.

The significance of Mahakal Temple in the politics of Madhya Pradesh is said to be immense. The presiding deity is highly worshipped in Madhya Pradesh. The BJP sought to take credit for the redevelopment of the Mahakal Temple Complex which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.

With the BJP battling anti-incumbency factor in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress is hoping to come back to power in the state. But Modi led the BJP campaign in a big way in the state to swing the outcome of the state election with his appeal among the voters. The BJP also sought to build campaign in Madhya Pradesh around the Ram Temple issue.
