NEW DELHI, August 11, 2025 — Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressing concerns over the safety and well-being of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. In a letter dated August 10, Raut sought “genuine information” on the former Vice President’s current status, citing rumours in Delhi that Dhankhar has been confined to his residence and is “reportedly not safe.”

Raut recounted that during the Parliament session on July 21, Dhankhar appeared normal and conducted proceedings as usual until a verbal altercation broke out between him and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, after which the House was adjourned for the day. Later that evening, it was announced that the Vice President had resigned citing health reasons.

Terming the development “shocking,” Raut said attempts by several Rajya Sabha members to contact Dhankhar had been unsuccessful, further deepening worries about his location and safety. He revealed that some MPs were even considering approaching the Supreme Court with a habeas corpus petition.

“I hope you will understand my sentiments and provide genuine information regarding Shri Dhankhar’s current whereabouts and his safety and health,” Raut urged in his letter to Shah.

Jagdeep Dhankar Resignation: Slip, Spin, and Siesta

Earlier, Rajya Sabha MP Kabil Sibal in a press conference had said that an habeas corpus petition may have to be found as “all efforts to contact former Vice President Dhankar had been unsuccessful.” “We have known each other for years. But he is n o more taking phone calls. Nobody is responding to his whereabout,” Sibal had said in the press conference.

Sibal had also said that his one phone call just after former Vice President had resigned was picked up bis his personal staff. “After that phone call, no one answers phone calls. This is despite the fact that I have been knowing him for years, from days we argued cases in the Supreme Court,” Sibal told reporters.

The Opposition had also sought to argue the case to give a farewell to Dhankar in a meeting of the business advisory council of the Rajya Sabha. But reports said that the government showed no interest to pleas of the Opposition to give a respectable farewell to Dhankar.

Dhankar quit the post of the Vice President in a huff, citing health reasons, and since then he has n either been seen in public nor heard. Dhankar was West Bengal Governor before he was elected to the post of the Vice President. The move on the part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been seen as a bid to placate Jat vote base in western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
