Jaisalmer, April 19, 2025: In a fresh push to promote border tourism in Rajasthan, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that coordinated efforts are underway to enhance tourist experiences near the India-Pakistan border, especially around the revered Tanot Mata Temple and the desert city of Jaisalmer.
Speaking to the media, Shekhawat revealed that he had reviewed progress on the Border Tourism initiative earlier in the day with officials from the Border Security Force (BSF). “They have assured that the project will be completed within the stipulated time frame,” he said, adding that discussions with Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma were also underway to accelerate the work.
Key components of the initiative include the construction of an amphitheatre near Tanot Mata Temple to host daily events in collaboration with the armed forces and the BSF. “We’re working on designing a grand entry gate to the site so that every visitor feels the pride and emotion of standing close to the nation’s frontier,” Shekhawat said.
He also highlighted a recent high-level meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, which involved officials from the Ministries of Defence, Home Affairs, and Tourism. “Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already issued clear directions to facilitate tourism along the border, allowing visitors a firsthand experience of the frontier. We expect positive results soon,” he added.
Heritage Preservation in Jaisalmer a Shared Responsibility
On concerns related to the deterioration of the Jaisalmer Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shekhawat expressed deep concern over unauthorized construction activities within the restricted areas of the fort. “It is troubling to see the fort’s aesthetics being compromised. ASI has issued multiple notices which must be acted upon,” he said, urging district authorities to take strict measures for preservation.
To promote year-round tourism in the scorching summer months, Shekhawat mentioned that efforts are being made to develop new attractions and enhance facilities in Jaisalmer.
Border Tourism Potential in Rajasthan
Rajasthan’s western front, especially the Tanot–Longewala region, holds immense tourism potential due to its proximity to the Indo-Pak border, historical military significance, and spiritual appeal. Tanot Mata Temple, revered as a protector during the 1965 and 1971 wars, is already a site of pilgrimage. With improved infrastructure and official facilitation, the area could attract not just religious tourists, but also patriotic and adventure tourism enthusiasts.
The Longewala war memorial, sand dunes of the Thar Desert, and BSF’s flag-lowering ceremonies can offer a unique tourism experience, akin to the Wagah border in Punjab. If executed effectively, this initiative could boost the local economy, create employment, and strengthen the emotional connection between citizens and the armed forces.
Honouring Ambedkar’s Legacy Through ‘Panch Teerth’
The Union Minister also spoke about the government’s efforts to develop the ‘Panch Teerth’, five sacred sites associated with the life of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. “Our goal is to ensure that the coming generations can connect with and be inspired by the ideals of Babasaheb,” he said.
Taking a swipe at political opponents, Shekhawat noted, “The party that claimed to be close to Ambedkar did not respect his ideals. It is the BJP that is truly working to carry forward his vision.”
