Sand Burial
The Asian Age in its Editorial has slammed the Centre and Manipur government for “head-in-the-sand approach in dealing with the ethnic violence in the state” in the backdrop of the Supreme Court observing during a suo motu hearing that there is a complete breakdown of the Constitutional machinery and law and order. The daily opined that Manipur is a fit case for application of Article 356 to impose President’s Rule.
After three months of horror in Manipur, the dark realities of the violence are now being unlayered, begging national attention and indignation. One Kargil War hero’s wife was also among women who were paraded naked and allegedly sexually assaulted in the viral video.
Dropping Guards
The Telegraph in its Editorial has said that many of the punitive provisions axed through the Jan Vishwash (Amendment of provisions) Bill 2023 were not unwarranted but still some sweeping decriminalisation may have serious repercussions. The Kolkata-based daily questioned the move to decriminalise offences of the pharmaceutical manufacturers in the backdrop of the deaths of children in African and Central Asian countries. It added that felling a tree in a forest will just invite a fine of Rs 500!
While the ease of doing business certainly needs rewriting the British era laws, the public safety and environment are non-negotiable. Food and Drugs adulterations are too serious issues to be dealt with mere fines.
Highway Policing
The Tribune has lauded Punjab to clear recruitment of 1,300 staffers for the Sadak Surakhya Force to become the first state in the country for highways policing. The Chandigarh-based daily further said that the plan envisages the traffic police vehicles — equipped with speed radars, body cameras, breathalysers and medical kits. The daily said that the state seeks to station police vehicles every 30 kms.
Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari has said that the Indian economy loses almost 3.5 per cent of the GDP due to road accidents, with the toll mostly of the working age group population. The toll operators are seen inadequately equipped to enforce speed discipline and even wrong side driving.
