Patna, November 18, 2025 — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to retain Samrat Choudhary as deputy Chief Minister in Bihar. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is all set to elect Nitish Kumar as legislative leader of the alliance in a meeting on Wednesday to set stage for the 10th swearing of the incumbent Chief Minister.

The BJP will once again place two deputy CMs in the Bihar Cabinet. Choudhary is most likely to retain his position, said informed sources.

“Samrat Choudhary built a good working rapport with Nitish Kumar in the last term. With the government in continuity mode, he should continue as the deputy CM while the BJP may think of fresh ideas for the second slot of the Dy CM,” said a senior BJP functionary.

The BJP, incidentally, balances caste equations in the party’s choices for the posts of the two deputy CMs. Samrat Choudhary hails from Koeri caste, which is also known as Kushwaha in some parts of the state. Vijay Kumar Sinha, another deputy CM in the previous Nitish Kumar Cabinet, hails from Kayastha caste. The BJP, thus, balances the OBC and upper caste equation in Bhar.

Incidentally, Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) also counts on core electoral constituency of Luv-Kush (Kurmi-Koeri). The BJP sources said that Samrat Choudhary has further cemented his position after he came under attacks from Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor. “Dropping him will mean that the BJP gave credence to allegations of Kishor, which will not be done by the party leadership,” sources in the party said.

Samrat Choudhary is son of Shakuni Choudhary, who was a party hopper with long stints in Janata Dal. Kishor had levelled serious allegations of crimes against Samrat Choudhary in the run up to the Bihar Assembly elections.
