RVNL Secures ₹729.82 Crore Power Distribution Project in Himachal Pradesh

By TRH News Desk

New Delhi, March 25: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Railways, has secured a major power infrastructure project in Himachal Pradesh. The project, valued at ₹729.82 crore, was awarded by Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL).

The state electricity board awarded the project under the Revamped Reforms-based and Results-linked Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) for Loss Reduction Works. This significant project aims to modernize and strengthen the power distribution network across the Central Zone of Himachal Pradesh, covering rural, semi-urban, and urban areas.

RVNL is already involved in similar projects in the North and South Zones of the state, reinforcing its role in the region’s energy infrastructure development.

Scope of Work:

The project will focus on several key initiatives to enhance the power distribution system in the region, including:

  • Replacing Bare Conductors with Insulated (AB) Conductors to boost safety and efficiency.
  • Installing and Augmenting Distribution Transformers (DTs) to reduce overloading and enhance voltage profiles.
  • Bifurcating and Reconfiguring Overloaded Feeders to minimize technical losses and improve power supply.
  • Installing High Voltage Distribution Systems (HVDS) in theft-prone areas to curb power pilferage.
  • Converting LT Lines to HT Lines to increase system efficiency and reduce transmission losses.
  • Deploying Energy Meters at feeders, DTs, and consumer premises for accurate energy accounting.
  • Integrating Smart Meters and Remote Metering Infrastructure to streamline billing efficiency and revenue collection.
  • Strengthening Earthing and Pole Structures to ensure safety and system reliability.
  • Modernizing Distribution Substations with RMUs and Sectionalizers for better control and monitoring.

Geographical Coverage:

The project spans rural, semi-urban, and urban areas in Himachal Pradesh’s Central Zone, known for its challenging hilly terrain and dispersed consumer base. Tailored technical and logistical solutions will be implemented to overcome these challenges, ensuring the project’s success.

Strategic Importance:

This power distribution infrastructure upgrade is a crucial step towards building a modern, efficient, and financially sustainable electricity distribution system in the region. By investing in loss reduction and modernizing the grid, the project is expected to enhance operational efficiency, improve consumer satisfaction, and contribute significantly to the region’s economic development.

Commenting on the project, Pradeep Gaur, Chairman & Managing Director of RVNL, said, “This project reaffirms RVNL’s expertise in executing critical power distribution infrastructure initiatives.”

He also said that “with a strong focus on reducing losses and enhancing the efficiency of the power distribution network, this initiative is a step towards achieving a modern and consumer-centric electricity supply system”.

“By leveraging smart technologies, strengthening infrastructure, and deploying best practices, we aim to ensure reliable and sustainable power distribution in Himachal Pradesh,” he added.

RVNL’s involvement in this project underscores its pivotal role in India’s national infrastructure development, especially in the energy sector, further supporting the country’s long-term vision of an efficient and resilient power network.
