As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fourth year, casualties mount, economies strain, and stalled diplomacy under Donald Trump leaves Kyiv and Moscow locked in attrition.

New Delhi, February 25, 2026 — Four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the Russia-Ukraine war 4 years milestone is marked not by resolution — but by staggering human, territorial and economic costs.

The United Nations has verified more than 15,000 civilian deaths since 2022, cautioning that the true figure is likely far higher due to lack of access to occupied areas such as Mariupol, where thousands reportedly died during Russia’s siege. Ukrainian cross-border retaliatory strikes have also killed hundreds inside Russia.

Kyiv estimates nearly 20,000 Ukrainian children have been forcibly displaced or transferred from occupied territories.

Military Losses: Competing Narratives, Grim Reality

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently said 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed — widely viewed as conservative. Moscow has not updated its official losses since 2022.

Independent Russian outlet Mediazona, working with the BBC, has verified at least 177,000 Russian military deaths through public records. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates Russian fatalities could be as high as 325,000, with Ukrainian losses between 100,000 and 140,000.

Territory: Nearly One-Fifth Under Russian Control

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia controls roughly 19.5% of Ukrainian territory as of mid-February. Around 7% — including Crimea and parts of Donbas — was already under Russian control before 2022.

While Moscow made its largest advances since the early invasion last year, momentum has slowed into a grinding war of attrition. The Kremlin continues pushing for full control of Donetsk and a halt to Western military aid to Kyiv — conditions Ukraine calls unacceptable and unconstitutional.

Diplomacy Under Strain

Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, multiple negotiation rounds in Istanbul, Abu Dhabi and Geneva have failed to secure a breakthrough. Washington has supplied $115 billion in aid since 2022, but Trump has partially suspended arms deliveries while pressing Europe to shoulder more responsibility. Europe has delivered €201 billion in support, according to Germany’s Kiel Institute.

Economic Shockwaves

Ukraine’s economy shrank nearly one-third in the first year of war and remains heavily dependent on international lenders, including the IMF. Russia’s economy, buoyed initially by massive military spending (nearly 9% of GDP), slowed to 1% growth last year. Oil and gas revenues — about a quarter of state income — fell to a five-year low amid sanctions and Ukrainian strikes on energy facilities.

The World Bank estimates Ukraine’s reconstruction bill at $588 billion over the next decade.

Society and Political Fallout

Ukraine remains under martial law, suspending elections while facing corruption controversies in its energy sector. In Russia, authorities have intensified crackdowns on dissent. More than 10,000 legal cases have reportedly been opened against individuals accused of criticising the armed forces.

Returning veterans — including former convicts recruited to fight — have been linked to rising violent crime domestically.

A War Without End?

The World Health Organization has verified over 2,800 attacks on healthcare facilities in Ukraine. Around one-fifth of Ukrainian land is contaminated by mines or unexploded ordnance, according to UN agencies.

Entire cities — including Bakhmut, Toretsk and Vovchansk — lie in ruins.

Four years on, the war has reshaped geopolitics, battered economies, and left millions displaced. Yet diplomacy remains stalled and battlefield lines hardened.

The question looming over Europe: Is this a frozen conflict—or the prelude to another escalation?
