NEW DELHI, September 10, 2025 — When US President Donald Trump typed “Here we go!” on Truth Social in response to Russia’s alleged drone violation of Polish airspace, it summed up the sense of foreboding sweeping across Europe. A NATO ally had reported 19 drone incursions overnight — not strays, Poland insists, but deliberate probes — and that forces the West to confront its most dangerous question since the Ukraine war began: what happens if Russia tests NATO directly?
Warsaw scrambled its air force, shot down several drones, and went public with a blunt warning: “This is not just a threat to Poland. It’s a threat to NATO and the EU.” Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski went further, accusing Moscow of using drone warfare as a strategic tool of intimidation. NATO convened under Article 4, but Secretary General Mark Rutte offered only caution, admitting there was no proof of “intent” yet.
Moscow’s response? Complete denial. Russia’s Foreign Ministry dismissed Poland’s claims as myths designed to “aggravate the crisis,” stressing its drones lack the range to even reach Polish airspace. The Kremlin even offered consultations — a diplomatic olive branch wrapped in a defiant sneer.
But the optics are troubling. Europe’s airspace has been punctured, its citizens unsettled, and NATO’s credibility once again tested. For hawks in Warsaw and Washington, it’s another step in Russia’s long game: normalizing aggression below the threshold of full war. For Moscow, it’s an opportunity to expose NATO’s hesitation.
The symbolism is stark. Just as Israel opens a dangerous new front in Yemen and Ukraine braces for winter strikes, Russia’s drones have put Poland in the crosshairs. Trump’s “Here we go” may read like a throwaway line, but to many Europeans, it echoes an uncomfortable truth: we may already be sliding into the war NATO vowed to prevent.
