Assad in Moscow while Israel Makes Quick Military Gains

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, December 9: Ending speculation about the whereabouts of the felled Syrian ruler, Russian news agencies confirmed that Bassar al-Assad is in Moscow. The news agencies in their reports stated that Russia granted Assad asylum on “humanitarian grounds”.

The Interfax, TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies in their reports quoting an unnamed source, saying that Assad has been granted asylum on “humanitarian grounds”. After the collapse of Damascus to the Türkiye-backed rebels on Sunday, reports clamed that the plane carrying Assad and his family members had vanished from the radars after taking off from the city.

The Türkiye-backed rebels on Sunday took control of Damascus. They ran over the Assad Rule in a span of 12 days. The positions of the rebels were being bombed by the Russian war planes till Sunday.

The Assad regime had the support of Russia and Iran per Arab observers. The Iranian embassy in Damascus quickly evacuated the personnel while removing the photograph of Hasan al-Nasrallah, the deceased head of the Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a short video message yesterday to give an update of the Israeli military quickly moving into the buffer zone with Syria in Golan Heights. Reports said that the Israeli military carried out strikes inside Syria to destroy defence assets. Tel Aviv-based media reports said thar Israel carried out the strikes in Syria against the risks of the military assets falling into terror organisations.

The Arab observers in their comments claimed that Israel clandestinely worked with the Syrian rebels, including the Syria wing of al-Qaeda. The US maintained neutrality but reports claimed that Washington too had covert engagement with the Syrian rebels.

“In 2011, during the Arab Spring, world leaders condemned the Assad regime, supporting efforts for political change or his ousting. The Arab League suspended Syria. Western nations imposed sanctions, largely backed the Syrian uprising, called for Assad resignation,” said Hassan I. Hassan, editor of NewlineMag, in a thread on X.

While the US and Israel remain circumspect over the fall of the Assad regime, the European Union and Canada have expressed joys at the sudden turn of events in Syria. Canadian Minister for Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly recalled that Ottawa had moved proceedings in the International Court of Justice against Assad. She said that Canada and Netherlands in June 2023 had sought the ICJ proceedings against Assad for crimes against humanity for brutal suppression of the Opposition leaders and critics.

Assad had packed the Sednaya Prison with his critics where they were meted out torture. Reports claimed that the Red Building within the Sednaya Prison housed more than 20,000 prison inmates.
