BJP-led Mahayuti Sweeps Maharashtra Assembly polls

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, November 23: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led the charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the consolidation of Hindu vote base. On the campaign trail, Fadnavis sang over two-minute-long son for awakening the Hindus.

Fadnavis will begin with invocation of the glory of Shivaji in his song sung with passion of a devout. He recalled the Hindu awakening by Shivaji.

Top Maharashtra BJP leader will then sing glory to Guru Govind Singh. Rani Luxmi Bai of Jhansi also featured in Fadnavis’s exhortations to the people for the awakening of the Hindus.

The BJP was leading on 127 Assembly seats with a strike rate of whopping 80 per cent in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Shiv Sena headed by incumbent chief minister Eknath Shinde was leading on 55 Assembly seats. The NCP of Ajit Pawar was leading on 39 Assembly seats.

The Mahayuti consisting of the BJP, the Shinde-headed Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP were leading on 224 Assembly seats on Saturday afternoon. Maharashtra has a total of 288 Assembly seats.

Shinde credited ‘Ladki Bahin Yojna’ for the landslide victory. The ‘Ladki Bahin Yojna’ provides ₹1500 per month to women in Maharashtra. The BJP-led Mahayuti promised to raise the amount to ₹3000 per month after coming back to power again in Maharashtra.

Fadnavis in his first message said “ek hain to safe hai, Modi hai to mumkin hai (United we are safe; Modi makes things possible)”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had improvised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s slogan of ‘Batenge to ketenge (Divided we shall fall)’.

Posters of Adityanath’s slogan sported the skyline of Uttar Pradesh where bypolls for nine Assembly seats were held. Modi took the cue from Adityanath to raise the slogan of ‘ek hai, to safe hai’. The slogan was well camouflaged as it escaped the censure of the Election Commission, for the prime minister seemed asking the people for unity.

But Fadnavis with his rendition of the awakening of the Hindus sent Modi’s slogan galloping in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Hindu consolidation worked for the BJP against separate identities in Maharashtra.

The BJP faced troubles in the Marathwada region. The Maratha reservation agitation had been testing the BJP. The Mahayuti government in Mumbai also faced resentment from farmers growing onion, soybean, and cotton.

The saffron charge of the BJP came with the RSS closing ranks at the booth levels per sources in the organisation. The RSS worked on the ground to give effect to the consolidation of the Hindu vote base, said a senior BJP functionary.
